ADFA-6672: Fail a plugin that hits a missing API class instead of crashing - #2212
A plugin built against a newer plugin API no longer crashes an older CoGo at startup. The plugin fails to load and the app keeps running.
Cause
The first time such a plugin touches a class the installed CoGo lacks, it throws NoClassDefFoundError, a LinkageError and so an Error. In GlitchTip CODEONTHEGO-10B, AI-Agent-Claude's initialize() resolved LlmBackendRegistration on C-r-0914, which predates that class. plugin-manager caught only Exception. The Error escaped loadPlugins() and the startup GlobalScope job, and killed the app.
On the load and unload paths, catch Throwable where plugin-manager calls plugin code. CancellationException is still rethrown first.
IPlugin.initialize(), now called through a new initializePlugin() so a test can drive it
loadPlugin()'s outer catch, and the per-file async job in loadPlugins()
verifyAllPluginDocumentation(), which runs inside loadPlugins()
onDocumentationUninstall() in removePluginDocumentation(), and the unloadPlugin() job that calls it
Testing
PluginLinkageErrorTest: a stub plugin whose initialize() and onDocumentationUninstall() throw NoClassDefFoundError. With the old catch (e: Exception) clauses restored, both tests fail with the error escaping. With this change both pass.
:plugin-manager:testV8DebugUnitTest: 146 tests, all pass. spotlessCheck is clean.
Not tested on a device.
No UI changed, so no font-scale check.
Sites checked
A sweep of every call from CoGo into plugin code found 38 sites. Sites already guarded by runCatching or catch (Throwable) are unchanged: class load and constructor, activate, deactivate and dispose, extension queries in PluginManager, editor tabs, lifecycle listeners and decorations.
Limitations
Phones on releases before this one keep crashing until users update CoGo.
plugin.min_ide_version (YY.WW) is still not enforced at load. Only isNotBlank() is checked. The plugin-api docs that say it is enforced (ToolSourceRegistry.java:28) remain wrong until a check exists. Enforcing it needs BuildInfo.RELEASE_VERSION, which plugin-manager does not depend on and which is blank in debug builds.
About 14 UI call sites in app/ call plugin code with catch (Exception) or no catch: sidebar, menus, toolbar and file-tab actions, bottom-sheet tabs, project search and plugin fragments. They can still crash when the user opens that UI. Out of scope here.
ADFA-6704 is not fixed by this change. That crash is in AI-Core's LlmInferenceServiceImpl, called by other plugins, not by CoGo.
…shing
A plugin built against a newer plugin API, loaded by an older CoGo,
throws NoClassDefFoundError (a LinkageError, so an Error) the first
time it touches a class that CoGo release lacks. GlitchTip
CODEONTHEGO-10B: AI-Agent-Claude's initialize() resolving
LlmBackendRegistration on C-r-0914.
The plugin-load path caught only Exception, so the Error escaped
loadPlugins() and the startup GlobalScope job, and killed the app.
Catch Throwable where plugin-manager calls plugin code on the
load/unload paths:
- initialize(), via a new initializePlugin() helper so it is testable
- loadPlugin()'s outer catch and the per-file async job in loadPlugins()
(CancellationException is still rethrown first)
- verifyAllPluginDocumentation() (runs inside loadPlugins())
- onDocumentationUninstall() in removePluginDocumentation() and the
unloadPlugin() job that calls it
PluginLinkageErrorTest fails on the old catch clauses with the
NoClassDefFoundError escaping, and passes with this change.

Summary
Plugin loading now handles Throwable failures, returns an already-loaded instance for duplicate plugin IDs, and cleans up the failed context and reserved sidebar slots. Once a plugin enters loadedPlugins, its context and slots remain with the live plugin.
Plugin callbacks in selected asynchronous paths now handle linkage errors such as NoClassDefFoundError. Listener iteration continues after a listener fails. Coroutine cancellation is rethrown in the documented paths.
Plugin deactivation continues when deactivate() throws. Documentation cleanup also handles uninstall failures and closes documentation.db if tooltip retrieval fails.
Added PluginLinkageErrorTest coverage for documentation uninstall and build-status and editor content-change listeners.
Risks and limits: Main-thread plugin errors remain under the existing Looper guard. Some plugin call sites are not covered by this change. Concurrent loads of the same plugin ID can race, and build-status listeners may remain registered after a failed load. plugin.min_ide_version is not enforced.
Reported checks passed: :plugin-manager:testV8DebugUnitTest (146 tests), :app:kaptV8DebugKotlin, :app:compileV8DebugKotlin, and spotlessCheck. No test loads a real .cgp, and device testing was not performed.
Plugin loading now handles broader throwable failures, returns an existing instance for duplicate IDs, and cleans up tracked resources after failed loads. Documentation, snippet, build, editor, and asynchronous loading paths also handle throwable failures. New tests cover linkage errors in documentation and listener callbacks.
Plugin loading reuses an instance with a duplicate manifest ID and tracks context and sidebar slots for failure cleanup. Cleanup attempts to release registered resources independently. Disabling continues state updates and notifications if deactivation throws.
Documentation and plugin loading callbacks plugin-manager/src/main/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/documentation/PluginDocumentationManager.kt, plugin-manager/src/main/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/snippets/PluginSnippetManager.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/app/CredentialProtectedApplicationLoader.kt, plugin-manager/src/test/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/core/PluginLinkageErrorTest.kt
Documentation operations and snippet contribution retrieval catch broader throwable failures. Asynchronous plugin loading captures non-cancellation failures in Sentry. A test checks that a documentation-uninstall linkage error does not escape.
Build and editor listener failures plugin-manager/src/main/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/services/IdeBuildServiceImpl.kt, plugin-manager/src/main/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/services/IdeEditorServiceImpl.kt, plugin-manager/src/test/kotlin/com/itsaky/androidide/plugins/manager/core/PluginLinkageErrorTest.kt
Build and editor callbacks log throwable failures and continue listener iteration. Tests check that a build listener runs after an earlier listener throws and that an editor content-change linkage error does not escape.

Propagate cancellation from plugin initialization.
If plugin.initialize(context) throws CancellationException, runCatching stores it in Result.failure. loadPlugin then returns that failure, so the cancellation catch in loadPlugins cannot run. Rethrow cancellation here and in the outer loadPlugin catch at Line 698; otherwise cancellation becomes a recorded plugin load failure. (kotlinlang.org)

Remove services published by a failed plugin.
If initialize() publishes a service and then throws NoClassDefFoundError, this cleanup leaves the service in SharedServiceRegistry. PluginContextImpl.getPluginService() can still return that partially initialized service to other plugins. Remove the failed plugin’s published services during cleanup. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep cleanup scoped to the failed load.
If two plugin archives have the same ID and one fails initialization, these calls also remove the successful plugin’s lifecycle listeners and resource context. loadPlugin() does not reject an already-loaded ID, and startup loads archives in parallel. Reject duplicate IDs atomically or track registrations by load instance. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Remove build listeners when plugin initialization fails.
When initialize() registers a BuildStatusListener and then throws NoClassDefFoundError, releaseFailedLoad leaves the listener in the singleton IdeBuildServiceImpl. Later builds still invoke that listener. The notifier catches listener failures, but the failed plugin listener remains active and can retain and execute failed-load code.
Track listeners in each PluginBuildService instance and remove only that instance’s listeners during failed-load cleanup. Do not remove listeners by plugin ID, because duplicate-ID reloads must preserve the live plugin’s listeners.

Assert that later editor content listeners still run.
The test only checks that dispatch returns. It still passes if the first listener's NoClassDefFoundError is caught and dispatch returns before the later listeners run. Register a healthy second content listener and assert that it runs. The build-listener assertion covers IdeBuildServiceImpl, not this editor dispatch loop.
