@karsterr Thanks for addressing the Debian Trixie failure.. Could you select the package based on repository availability instead of replacing The current branch also covers Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, where I believe the robust approach would be to run |
Debian 13 no longer ships a tldr package; tealdeer provides the tldr command. Ubuntu 22.04 has tldr but no tealdeer, so only substitute it when apt actually offers tealdeer. Based on upstream ChrisTitusTech/linutil#1376. Co-authored-by: Efe Can Kara <kr.efecan@gmail.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Debian tealdeer package availability Debian releases Ubuntu 22.04 tldr package apt
💡 Result:
- **Debian:** `tealdeer` is available in Debian Bookworm and Trixie; install it with `sudo apt install tealdeer`. The package installs the command as `tldr`. ([packages.debian.org](https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/tealdeer?utm_source=openai))
- **Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy):** the repository provides **`tldr`**, a different client—not `tealdeer`. Install with `sudo apt install tldr`; it’s in Universe. ([packages.ubuntu.com](https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/tldr?utm_source=openai))
So on Jammy, `apt install tealdeer` isn’t supported by the listed Ubuntu packages; the `tealdeer` package appears in later Ubuntu releases, not Jammy. ([packages.ubuntu.com](https://packages.ubuntu.com/tealdeer?utm_source=openai))

site:packages.ubuntu.com Ubuntu 24.04 tldr tealdeer package site:packages.debian.org Debian stable tldr tealdeer
💡 Result:
- **Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble):** Both packages are available: `tealdeer` (`1.6.1-4build2`) and `tldr` (`0.9.2-5`). Ubuntu describes `tldr` as a **transitional package** that depends on `tldr-hs`; `tealdeer` is the separate Rust-based client. ([packages.ubuntu.com](https://packages.ubuntu.com/en/noble/tealdeer?utm_source=openai))
- **Debian stable:** `tealdeer` is available in Debian’s stable suite (Trixie), version `1.7.2-1+deb13u1`; its executable is named `tldr`. ([packages.debian.org](https://packages.debian.org/trixie/utils/tealdeer?utm_source=openai))
So, if you mean the **tealdeer client**, the package name is `tealdeer` in both distributions; in Debian it provides the `tldr` command.

Ubuntu Noble 24.04 packages tldr tealdeer apt package availability official packages.ubuntu.com
💡 Result:
Yes. **Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) has the `tealdeer` package** in the `universe` component: version `1.6.1-4build2`, available for amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, and s390x. ([packages.ubuntu.com](https://packages.ubuntu.com/en/noble/tealdeer?utm_source=openai))
The official package listing names it **`tealdeer`**, not `tldr`. Enable `universe` if needed, then install with:
```bash
sudo apt install tealdeer
```
The package details page confirms Noble package availability; it doesn’t establish whether a separate package named `tldr` is available.

Check the fallback package before installing it.
On Ubuntu 22.04 with the universe component disabled, apt-cache show tldr fails because tldr is in universe. tealdeer is not available in Jammy. The branch then selects tealdeer, and the final package installation fails. Because the script uses #!/bin/sh -e, the setup exits without installing its dependencies.

Type of Change
Description
On Debian-based systems,
compile-setup.shfails during dependency installation because thetldrpackage is absent from standard APT repositories. Debian package index providestealdeerinstead, a Rust-basedtldrimplementation that provides the sametldrbinary.This PR updates
compile-setup.shto usetldron apt-based systems when an install candidate is available, falling back totealdeerotherwise.Testing
Verified on Debian Trixie:
$ ./compile-setup.sh ... tealdeer is already the newest version (1.7.2-1+deb13u1). ... $ tldr nano Text editor. An enhanced `pico` clone. ...The
tldrcommand resolves and functions as expected post-installation.Note: As with standard
tealdeerbehavior, a fresh installation requires runningtldr --updateonce to populate the local cache.Issues / other PRs related
