What

Use your Claude plan for chat, titles, Studio and Agentic mode. A Claude Pro, Max or Team subscriber connects the plan through their own installed Claude Code: SurfSense never signs in to Claude, never holds a Claude credential, and ships no Claude Code. How it works: docs/architecture/claude-plan.md. Decisions: ADR 0057, ADR 0060, ADR 0061.

Connection and setup

  • A new connection kind, claude_plan (migration 0031), set up from Settings and onboarding. The row shows at once; its dialog reads Claude Code's live state (not installed, too old, signed out, ready) and says what to do.
  • The Agent SDK is installed without its own bundled Claude Code; every run names the user's binary.

Chat

  • Basic chat, titles and Studio answer through Claude Code with every tool off, behind the existing Generator protocol. Warm runs per conversation.
  • Sign-in, plan-limit and egress failures show as their own chat errors.

Agentic mode

  • An engine interface (modules/agent/engines/) with opencode moved behind it unchanged, and a second engine that runs a thread's turns on Claude Code.
  • It does what opencode's turns do: SurfSense's tools over the same endpoint, the thread folder's read and write rules, skills, plugins with allow, ask and deny, approvals, Stop, the same frames on screen, and Save to Sources.
  • SurfSense's permission rules decide every tool call in a PreToolUse hook, with can_use_tool as the second gate.
  • Changing models across engines hands the thread over with a note of the turns the other engine missed; the thread reads back as one.
  • Migration 0032: chat_threads.agent_engine (every existing agent thread backfilled to opencode), claude_session_id, and two tables deleted with their thread: SurfSense's copy of the session transcript, and replies that did not finish.

Network

  • Claude Code reaches Anthropic only through a proxy the API runs, each host only while allowed. Agent runs get a separate proxy that also passes the turn's ready plugin hosts.
  • PUT /egress now takes several destinations in one transaction; the one-destination route is removed. One question asks for every host a user action needs.

Docs

  • New docs/architecture/claude-plan.md: what is built, with its Known gaps (Windows and Linux untested on a real install, no version floor before an agent turn, changed plugin tools picked up only on relaunch, no test running both engines through the same scenarios).
  • agent.md covers the two engines and the shared rule for unavailable plugins; egress.md, chat.md, connections.md and data-model.md are updated, and ADR 0057 says where the code stands.

Fixes that apply beyond this feature

  • Tunnels through SurfSense's proxy failed under uvloop (macOS and Linux), so plugins were unreachable; any failed connect is now answered 502.
  • Deleting a connection no longer flashes "connection not found" on its card, and a later connection given the same id never shows the old one's models.
  • Testing a chat model on a ChatGPT or Claude plan says it counts toward the plan's limits instead of costing money.
  • A plugin is reported unavailable only from its engine's settled answer, within one shared 25-second limit.

Why

Claude subscribers could only use Claude through an API key, paid separately from their plan. This lets them use the plan they already pay for, in chat and in Agentic mode, without SurfSense handling their Claude credentials.

Fixes #

How to test

  1. Install Claude Code and sign in: run claude in a terminal.
  2. cd surfsense_local/electron && pnpm dev.
  3. Settings › Add model › Use your Claude plan › Set up. The dialog shows your account and plan; Add Claude models asks once for api.anthropic.com and platform.claude.com.
  4. Choose a Claude model for chat. Send a message in a Basic chat; use Test chat on a model.
  5. Open an Agentic chat: search your sources, make a Word document, change it (a new version appears in Studio), call a plugin, approve or reject a plugin call, press Stop mid-reply.
  6. Switch the same Agentic thread to a non-Claude model and back: each answer continues the conversation.
  7. Turn a host off in Settings › Network during a reply: the chat says so.
  8. Without Claude Code installed, Set up says to install it and come back.

Tests:

cd surfsense_local/backend && uv run pytest -m unit
cd surfsense_local/backend && uv run pytest -m integration
cd surfsense_local/frontend && pnpm test

Tests under -m claude_code run your own Claude Code on your plan; they are opt-in (SURFSENSE_CLAUDE_CODE_TESTS=1), never run in CI, and are planned for removal.

Measured: Claude Code returns output_format answers through its own
StructuredOutput tool, valid against the schema in every run, and needs
more than one turn. A Claude plan model can therefore take the chat
router step and Studio's schemas; the open question is closed.

locate_claude searches PATH, then where Claude Code's installers put it
on macOS, Linux and Windows; on Windows only a claude.exe counts, since
the Agent SDK refuses npm's claude.cmd. read_status runs --version and
auth status and reports not_installed, too_old, signed_out or ready,
treating a hang or unreadable answer as no answer. Tests run a stand-in
claude on every system.

launch_options is the one place a run's options are made: the user's
binary, no user settings or MCP servers, verbatim prompts, the default
permission mode, no API key, no telemetry, and SurfSense's proxy, none of
which a caller can override. failure_of turns Claude Code's messages into
the sign-in, plan-limit and egress errors SurfSense already shows.
Pins claude-agent-sdk 0.2.168.

ClaudeRun is the only code that touches the Agent SDK's client: send a
message and stream what follows, interrupt, list models, close. Its tests
run the user's real Claude Code under the new opt-in claude_code marker,
skipped unless SURFSENSE_CLAUDE_CODE_TESTS=1 and Claude Code is signed in.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Revision 0031 widens provider_connections.auth_kind to accept
claude_plan, the only schema change the Claude plan needs: it stores no
credential, and what Claude Code reports is read live. SQLite cannot
alter a CHECK, so the table is rebuilt from its own stored definition,
with every remote selection kept aside and put back, since dropping the
table cascades through selected_models.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
GET /llm/connections/claude reads Claude Code's state live: not
installed, too old, signed out, or ready with its account and plan.
POST makes the claude_plan connection once Claude Code is ready and
api.anthropic.com allowed, one per install. The connection serves chat
only, lists Claude Code's models by their full ids so the manifest's
Anthropic capabilities apply, and can only be renamed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ClaudePlanProvider is a Generator over Claude Code with every tool off:
SurfSense's system prompt in place of Claude Code's, text and thinking
streamed, a schema answered as structured output, the newest message's
images sent beside it, and plan, sign-in and run failures raised as the
errors chat already shows. A warm run per conversation, at most four,
answers the next message from what it holds; an edited conversation, a
busy run or another model starts from the whole conversation instead.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A claude_plan connection now resolves to the Claude plan's generator,
over one pool of warm runs for the API process, so chat, thread titles,
the chat check and Studio answer through the user's own Claude Code.
The API closes every warm run when it stops.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every Claude Code run goes through a loopback proxy the API serves,
which tunnels only api.anthropic.com, for model calls, and
platform.claude.com, where Claude Code refreshes its sign-in, each
while its egress is on. No run starts without the proxy. Connecting,
listing models, choosing one and generating all require both hosts,
named in one refusal; a host turned off mid-reply ends the run at
Claude Code's first retry rather than its tenth. The proxy reuses the
plugin proxy's tunnel with a host list of its own, so opencode never
reaches Anthropic and Claude Code never reaches a plugin.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An nvm folder's version is read by splitting vX.Y.Z, with a folder that
is not a version ranked below every one, and the real chat test reads
the tunnelled hosts from the proxy's log records rather than its text.
Claude Code's own version string keeps its regex: it is another
program's output, and a pattern found anywhere survives its changes.

The SDK's wheel carries a 241 MB Claude Code that PyInstaller leaves
out, since nothing asks for the SDK's data. A packaging test now reads
every spec and fails when any collector names the SDK, and the frozen
API test fails when a claude binary is in the bundle. Measured: the SDK
adds 0.22 MB to the frozen API and no Claude Code.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The SDK's wheels carry a 241 MB Claude Code; its source package carries
none. no-binary-package makes uv build the SDK from source, so no venv,
CI cache or frozen app holds that copy, and pnpm dev's predev does it
through uv run with nothing done by hand. A unit test, run on every
system in CI, fails if the installed SDK ever carries one again; it
replaces the spec-reading packaging test, which guarded a file that is
no longer installed.

A Claude plan raised the ChatGPT plan's errors, so chat told its users
to sign in to ChatGPT in Model setup. Its sign-in and limit errors are
now Claude subclasses of those, sorted first into claude_sign_in and
claude_limit, and a missing or signed-out Claude Code answers the model
check with claude_sign_in_required. Code that catches the parent errors
is unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A "Use your Claude plan" row beside the ChatGPT one opens a dialog that
reads Claude Code's state live and says what to do: install it, run
claude and sign in, or update it, with Check again; once ready, Add
Claude models asks for both of its hosts in one egress question and
makes the connection. The egress prompt now asks about every host a
refusal or askEgress names at once, wording a Claude plan's two by what
each gets, which also makes ChatGPT's sign-in one question. Editing a
Claude plan only renames it, chat names its failures in Claude's terms,
and Electron opens Claude Code's install guide and no other page of
that site. Every new string is in all ten languages.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The architecture doc and the route's docstring still said the hosts
were asked about one by one, which the multi-host egress prompt
changed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
PUT /egress takes every destination one answer covers and switches them
together: each is checked before any is written, and the request's one
transaction commits them all or none, so a failed Allow leaves no host
on. It replaces PUT /egress/{destination}; Settings > Network sends a
list of one, and every consent question, the frontend's only caller of
both, now makes one request. Recording consent changes; checking it,
egress.require() on every call, does not.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ADR 0058 records which hosts one egress question names: every host a
user action may reach, including hosts its background work reaches,
which no dialog could ask about later, and never a host SurfSense has
not named. egress.md says the same under asking for consent.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…its hosts

The status check now runs through the Claude proxy with the environment
every run gets: it contacts nothing today, but a later Claude Code that
checks its sign-in online is held to consent too. The proxy logs a
refused host as Claude Code's, not opencode's, so a host a new release
tries on its own shows at once, and a claude_code test fails when the
installed binary refreshes its sign-in on a host SurfSense does not
allow.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A Claude Code run stopped at once when a host it needs was turned off
mid-reply, but the chat called it unknown: chat had an error kind for
an egress refusal only before a reply. It now sorts EgressDeniedError
into egress_disabled, which says the host was turned off in Settings >
Network and to allow it there, in every language.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The connection doc keeps Claude Code's proxy to Anthropic's two hosts,
while the agent doc gave Claude Code each plugin server, which needs
plugin hosts on that proxy. Record it as an open question for the agent
spikes, preferring plugins through SurfSense's tool endpoint.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rom spikes

Spikes against Claude Code 2.1.301 answered the agent's open questions.
Claude Code connects to plugins itself, as opencode does, so agent runs
get a proxy that also passes ready plugin hosts (ADR 0059, superseding
ADR 0057's network line); chat runs still reach only Anthropic. MCP
servers go in a file only the user can read, since the SDK otherwise
puts their headers on the command line. Denied tools go in
disallowed_tools, skills come through the plugins option, and the
result size limit is raised so nothing is written into ~/.claude. The
proposal now says why transcripts are mirrored: Claude Code deletes its
own after 30 days.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The chat, permission, step and workspace routes called opencode's thread
functions directly, so a second engine would have meant a branch at
each. They now ask the thread's engine through one protocol,
AgentEngine, and opencode's existing code is its only implementation,
with no change in behaviour. Recording a new thread's opencode session
moves from the chat router into the opencode engine.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
List each agent capability against both engines, and the two pieces of
opencode-only code that change so both get them. A Claude plan keeps
serving text generation only; what opens Agentic to it is the gate in
engine_choice.py.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e session

Migration 0032 adds chat_threads.agent_engine, set to opencode on every
thread with an opencode session, and uses_agent reads it instead of the
opencode session, so a Claude Code thread is an agent thread too. It
also adds claude_session_id and two tables deleted with their thread:
claude_session_entries, SurfSense's copy of the transcript through the
SDK's SessionStore, since Claude Code deletes its own after 30 days, and
claude_reply_endings for replies that stopped, failed or were cut off.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The gate decides each call a Claude Code turn makes, as opencode's rules
do for the same thread: reads inside the thread folder and the skills
folder, writes only under outputs/ and never an instruction file, links
followed first, SurfSense's own skills and tools, each plugin tool by the
gateway's rule, and every other tool refused with a reason.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… listing path

Claude Code's live messages become opencode's events and its transcript
opencode's messages, with tools named and their inputs keyed as opencode
spells them, so TurnFrames, step_of and thread_turns serve both engines
and the thread shows them alike. Skills and notes written for opencode
name SurfSense's tools and file tools as Claude Code lists them.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The MCP servers go in a 0600 file, not on the command line where their
sign-in headers would show. SurfSense's skills become a local plugin with
Claude Code's tool names. An agent run's proxy passes Anthropic's two
hosts and the ready plugins' hosts, by the checks already in use, while
a chat run's still passes Anthropic's alone (ADR 0059).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ed Claude Code

Opt-in, as the other claude_code tests: the gate in default mode, hidden
tools, sign-in headers off the command line, plugin traffic through the
proxy, a long result reaching the model, an approval waiting past the
hook timeout, and the next message answered after an interrupt.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A Claude plan model now opens Agentic threads, with no opencode needed,
and its turns run on the user's own Claude Code with what opencode's do:
SurfSense's tools over the same endpoint, the thread's plugins, skills,
the folder rules, approvals, Stop, and the same frames on screen. A
running Claude Code is kept per thread and relaunched when a turn's
servers, rules or model change; an interrupted turn is read to its end
so it never answers the next message.

Changing models across engines hands the thread over: the engine taking
it resumes its own session, or opens one in the thread's folder, and is
given a note of the turns it missed; the thread reads back as one.

The tool, permission and step routes are mounted without opencode too,
behind the launch key, and a Claude thread is offered the tools that
return images.

… come back

The row waited on an endpoint that runs the user's claude twice. It is
split: GET /llm/connections/claude says what a plan fills and the hosts
still off without running Claude Code, and GET .../claude/status reads
Claude Code's state live, for the dialog alone. With Claude Code not
installed, the dialog now ends its steps with coming back and checking
again.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The API runs on uvloop on macOS and Linux, whose create_connection has
no happy_eyeballs_delay, so every tunnel failed there: Claude Code never
reached Anthropic, and opencode never reached a plugin. The option is now
passed only on asyncio's own loop, which the API runs on Windows, where
it was added. Any failed connect is answered 502 rather than closed, which
Claude Code would retry ten times.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…an's test costs no money

Deleting a connection refreshed its own model list, which answered
"connection not found" on the card being removed; it is now taken off
the list and left out of the refresh. Its model list is cached by the
connection, not its id alone, since SQLite gives a deleted id to the
next connection. Testing a chat model on a ChatGPT or Claude plan says
it counts toward the plan's limits instead of costing money.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
uvicorn[standard] leaves uvloop out on Windows, so the module-level
import failed collection of the whole proxy test file there. Only the
uvloop test needs it; the other proxy tests still run on Windows.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…laude Code has tried it

The Claude turn asked Claude Code for its plugins' status right after it
started, when every one is still pending, and named them all unreachable.
It now reads them from the turn's init message, which Claude Code holds
until each has connected or failed. Both engines follow one rule: a
plugin is unavailable only from its engine's settled answer, within the
same 25 seconds, now Claude Code's MCP_TIMEOUT too, and for the same
three reasons, which move out of opencode's own module.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…saved for it

Claude Code saves a tool result too large to give whole under the
session's tool-results folder and tells the model to read it there,
which the gate refused as outside the thread. The gate now lets the model
read that session's saved results alone, as opencode's rules leave its
tool-output folder open; another session's, Claude Code's settings and
any write stay refused. The comment and docs that said a raised
MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS stops results being saved are corrected, and the
proposal notes that the tests running the real Claude Code will go.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8178e

Engine switches can leave the receiving engine without earlier conversation context. Fix both handover failure paths before merging; also correct the Windows test fixture and stale turn documentation.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8178e

A failed conversation switch can leave its execution state changed without transferring the previous context, and retry does not reliably repair that transition. Local executable trust also depends on installation permissions. No direct permission bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Handover advances durable conversation ownership before context delivery is assured. take_over commits the destination engine before constructing the note or running destination preflight, and treats an HTTP failure reading existing history as empty history. A later refusal, interruption, or history-read failure can therefore leave the destination current without the required context. On retry, the same-engine path returns no handover, so the failed transition is not automatically repaired. This is a newly introduced rollback and failure-containment defect; independent tool permissions remain in force.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A substituted discovered executable would execute with the API's OS authority and supplied environment, not within a separately demonstrated tenant sandbox. In the inspected desktop path this authority is inherited from the desktop process. A cross-user privilege increase or remotely writable executable source was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The new status endpoint triggers local execution, but does not accept an executable path from the request. Production discovery uses process PATH, home, and installation locations; execution uses fixed status arguments without a shell. The executable-provenance proof gap therefore remains deployment-dependent rather than establishing request-driven command injection.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Conversation context does not itself grant tool authority: each turn prepares plugin rules and hidden tools, and the gate independently decides tool calls. The execution proxy must be available before use; its allowed-host calculation combines Anthropic destinations with ready-plugin destinations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The in-process run registry rejects a second registered run, but registration occurs after handover and destination preflight. It therefore protects active execution without reserving or rolling back the earlier ownership transition.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make handover a recoverable per-thread transition: retain pending context until destination acceptance, serialize ownership changes before asynchronous preparation, and distinguish unreadable history from empty history. Preserve the independent tool gates during recovery.

ADR 0057 says where the code stands, and the docs and code comments that
cited the proposal cite the architecture doc.

…ssion with its thread

- A plugin whose offered tools changed is reconnected in the running Claude
Code (reconnect_mcp_server) instead of keeping its old listing; a failed
  reconnect starts the client over.
- A thread's Claude session is resumed only under the account that made it:
chat_threads.claude_account (revision 0032) keeps a digest of the account,
and another account gets a new session told the whole thread. The thread
reads back every session it had.
- One test runs the same scenarios through opencode and Claude Code and
compares what the chat shows and reads back.
- Deleting a thread or workspace deletes the session of every engine that ran
the thread, not only the one it is on now.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…en the plan is on extra usage

- Claude Code's own skills are refused by its skills allowlist, measured; the
doc says so instead of listing it as a gap. A session resumed after many
engine switches is stated as a choice, not a gap.
- A Claude Code newer than the newest the claude_code tests passed on is named
once in the log; NEWEST_TESTED is raised only once they pass again.
- Claude Code's transcript is deleted after each agent turn and its saved
results kept; deleting a thread removes both without delete_session.
- Each Claude plan reply sends where the plan stands (plan-extra-usage); while
it is on extra usage and a Claude plan model is selected, the composer says
so until a reply comes back within the plan or the plan resets.

…pping at the plan's limit

Past the plan's limit Claude Code reports the plan as rejected even while
extra usage pays (isUsingOverage, overageInUse), and goes on answering.
SurfSense took every rejected event as the limit and ended the reply. It now
applies Claude Code 2.1.301's own rule: only a refusal with no extra usage
ends a reply, and the composer notice follows either field.

… and say so above the composer

- One gatekeeper, usable_claude(), decides whether Claude Code may run: found,
and not older than MIN_VERSION (an unreadable version is let through). The
chat model's check, a chat, title or Studio run, and an Agentic turn all ask
  it before anything streams.
- The version is read once per binary as installed (path and modified time),
shared with the newer-than-tested log warning.
- A send refused as claude_too_old or claude_sign_in_required (409, answered
app-wide) launches nothing: the message goes back to the composer and the
chat model's check runs again, so its notice says why.

Review comments at @docs/architecture/agent.md:
- Line 31: Update the engine behavior documentation to reflect that `take_over`
moves a thread to the engine named by `agent_engine` when the selected model
changes, and that the row stores each engine’s session. In
docs/architecture/agent.md, link this explanation to `#two-engines`; in
docs/architecture/chat.md, replace the claim that a thread keeps its original
engine with a link to the agent doc’s “Two engines” section.

Review comments at @docs/architecture/data-model.md:

alongside api_key and chatgpt as valid auth_kind values, reflecting revision

Review comments at @docs/architecture/overview.md:

- Around line 21-26: Update thread_turns_of and stored_step_of to catch
HTTPException from non-current engines and continue searching the remaining
engines, so unavailable engines do not fail the read. Preserve propagation of
errors from the current engine, identified by engine is current.

Review comments at
@surfsense_local/backend/modules/agent/engines/handover/take_over.py:
- Around line 32-46: Update take_over to determine missed turns from the stored
engine sessions rather than relying on thread_engine(thread) to identify the
prior engine. Read the other engine’s turns after the last turn taking saw,
including when the thread already routes to taking, and keep _move limited to
updating routing when the engine changes.

Review comments at
@surfsense_local/backend/tests/unit/llm/subscriptions/claude/test_sdk_install.py:
- Around line 17-23: Update
`test_the_installed_agent_sdk_carries_no_claude_code` to handle `_bundled` being
absent: only inspect its contents when `bundled` is a directory, and treat a
missing directory as containing no shipped files.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

A turn refused after the move loses the handover note permanently.

take_over decides what the new engine missed from the thread.agent_engine flag. It also persists the move (_move) before run_turn checks anything. After take_over returns, run_turn can still refuse the turn with an HTTPException before it sends anything:

  • claude_turn: images attached (409), selected model not a Claude plan model (409), require_claude_hosts (the egress 403 that the window answers), usable_claude (claude_too_old).
  • agent_turn: images, a legacy thread, or a model gate (409).

After such a refusal, agent_engine already names the new engine, and that engine has a session. On the user's next send, leaving is taking, so moving is False. renew_session returns False, and take_over returns None. The new engine never receives the turns the other engine answered. One example: a host is off in Settings › Network, so the first Claude turn after a switch returns 403. The user allows the host and resends. Claude Code then starts without the opencode history. The thread still reads as one conversation in the UI, so nothing tells the user.

Compute the missed turns from the stored sessions, not from the flag. Use the other engine's turns after the last turn taking saw. Keep the flag update for routing only.

     leaving = thread_engine(thread)

- else:
- return None
- if moving:
+ if leaving is not taking:
         await transact(session, _move, thread, taking)

With this change, every turn on a thread that has used both engines reads both sessions. A thread that never switched skips the extra read, because _turns returns at once when the other engine has no session.

Update take_over to determine missed turns from the stored engine sessions
rather than relying on thread_engine(thread) to identify the prior engine. Read
the other engine’s turns after the last turn taking saw, including when the
thread already routes to taking, and keep _move limited to updating routing when
the engine changes.

Handle a missing _bundled directory.

The project forces claude-agent-sdk to install from its source package, which does not include _bundled. bundled.iterdir() therefore raises FileNotFoundError even when no Claude Code is installed.

… Windows

SurfSense looks only for claude.exe on Windows, as the Agent SDK refuses
npm's claude.cmd (CVE-2024-27980); the stand-in is a batch file, so every
test that found Claude Code the usual way saw none. The fixture now names
claude.cmd there, and a rewritten stand-in moves its file time on, so the
version read once per binary sees the swap where NTFS keeps the old time.

A thread that moved from opencode to Claude Code keeps its opencode session,
and reading it failed whole when opencode was not running. The engine the
thread left is now left out of the read, with a warning; the engine running
it is never skipped. Both readers take the engines as an argument and pick
the current one from the thread's agent_engine.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not treat an unreadable leaving session as an empty handover.

If a thread switches engines and the leaving engine has a session but returns an HTTPException, _turns returns []. take_over then moves the thread and returns no note. The taking engine can answer without the earlier turns, although the thread still presents them as one conversation. Propagate the read failure when the leaving engine’s turns are required for a switch. Keep the empty-list fallback only where missing turns are safe.

Update the turn flow for both engines.

Line 215 says every turn prepares an opencode instance and adds tools to it. The new “Two engines” section says turns select an engine, and Claude Code is now an Agentic engine. Describe the selected engine’s setup here, or split the opencode and Claude Code steps.

As per coding guidelines: “Docs describe the code on the branch they live on (dev)” and “A pull request that changes documented behaviour updates the doc in the same pull request.”

Update the turn-flow description under “The ticked sources” to match the engine
selected for the turn: distinguish OpenCode setup from Claude Code setup, and
describe only the setup steps each engine actually performs.

Isolate Windows installation directories in this fixture.

On Windows, installed=False does not guarantee that Claude Code is absent. locate_claude also searches paths derived from LOCALAPPDATA and APPDATA, but this fixture leaves both variables pointed at the developer’s directories. A test can find and run the developer’s installation instead of testing the missing-installation state. Point both variables at directories under tmp_path for every fixture invocation.
