Adds an index on block_trip_entry (block_id). trips-for-route on NJ Transit bus goes from 0.65 s to 0.05 s on a laptop (4–5 s in production before).
Root cause
GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs joins block_trip_entry to itself on block_id, and no index covered that column, so SQLite scanned every block entry for each route trip. schema.sql runs at every startup with IF NOT EXISTS, so existing databases get the index on the next start (checked against an already-imported NJ Transit DB).
Testing
Test failing on main before this change:TestBlockTripEntryBlockIDJoinUsesIndex runs EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN on the real GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs call against RABA and accepts the index on either join alias. Without the index the plan is:
SEARCH active_bte USING INDEX idx_block_trip_entry_service_id (service_id=?)
SEARCH active_trip USING INDEX sqlite_autoindex_trips_1 (id=?)
SEARCH route_bte USING INDEX idx_block_trip_entry_index_id (block_trip_index_id=?)
SEARCH route_trip USING INDEX sqlite_autoindex_trips_1 (id=?)
USE TEMP B-TREE FOR DISTINCT
so the test fails to match SEARCH \w+ USING (COVERING )?INDEX idx_block_trip_entry_block_id \(block_id=\?.
Manual check: local server on https://www.njtransit.com/bus_data.zip, GET /api/where/trips-for-route/NJB_101.json three times: before 0.65 0.65 0.65 s, after 0.069 0.054 0.054 s. CPU profile before: 89% in GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs.
Checklist
This PR addresses one issue.
It is under ~200 changed lines, or the description says why it can't be split.
This PR is not a bug fix, or the new or changed test fails on main and passes on this branch.
Each commit is one logical change with a clear message.
I did not hand-edit sqlc-generated files under gtfsdb/ (db.go, models.go, query.sql.go) or testdata/openapi.yml (synced from upstream).
This PR changes no handler, or handlers pass r.Context() to DB/service calls, not context.Background().
The response comparison above is filled in, or this PR doesn't change a Java-served response.
This PR adds no endpoint, or each new endpoint matches testdata/openapi.yml, has an issue open on OneBusAway/sdk-config, or is outside the SDK and the description says why.
I read every line of this diff and can explain it if asked.
Notes for reviewers
GetBlockTripIndexIDsForBlocks also matches on block_id, but on RABA without planner statistics it plans through idx_block_trip_entry_service_id. Running PRAGMA optimize after import and a composite (block_id, service_id) index are left for a follow-up.
On an existing database the index is built by the -- migrate step at the next start. On a fully imported NJ Transit DB (33,287 block_trip_entry rows) CREATE INDEX takes 0.02 s, so it doesn't delay readiness.

Walkthrough
The schema adds an index on block_trip_entry(block_id). Query-plan tests check index use for a block-trip self-join and a filtered stop-times lookup. A shared helper records queries and retrieves SQLite query-plan details.
Changes: Block-trip index
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared query-plan test helpers gtfsdb/query_plan_test.go, gtfsdb/stops_rtree_test.go
A shared helper records queries and arguments, then retrieves SQLite query-plan details. The filtered stop-times test uses the helper instead of a local query recorder and manual plan scan.
Add and verify the block ID index gtfsdb/schema.sql, gtfsdb/block_trip_entry_index_test.go
The schema adds idx_block_trip_entry_block_id on block_trip_entry(block_id). A test checks that SQLite uses the index for the block-trip self-join.
The index is applied to existing databases at startup, and the query-plan assertion recognizes the intended index search. Normal test checks remain before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Index block_trip_entry by block_id" matches the main change. The PR adds an index on block_trip_entry(block_id) in gtfsdb/schema.sql, and the linked objectives describe the same goal. The title is short, specific, and names the table and column.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1683 requires an index on block_trip_entry (block_id) so that the self-join in GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs no longer scans every block entry. The whole-PR diff (merge base to head) adds CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_block_trip_entry_block_id ON block_trip_entry (block_id) to gtfsdb/schema.sql, marked -- migrate, so existing databases receive it at startup. The issue's expected index name and column match. The diff also adds TestBlockTripEntryBlockIDJoinUsesIndex in gtfsdb/block_trip_entry_index_test.go. It calls the real GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs through a query recorder, runs EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN on the captured query, and asserts a SEARCH ... USING (COVERING) INDEX idx_block_trip_entry_block_id (block_id=? plan. Both coding requirements (index and automated test) are present at the reviewed head. The reported timings and the NJ Transit reproduction are not verified here. The incremental diff from the previous reviewed head could not be read, so this verdict rests on the whole-PR diff, which is authoritative.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff contains four files. gtfsdb/schema.sql adds the requested index with a comment naming its two block-ID lookups. gtfsdb/block_trip_entry_index_test.go is the new index test. gtfsdb/query_plan_test.go moves the query recorder and the EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN helper into a shared file. gtfsdb/stops_rtree_test.go drops its local recorder and uses the shared helper. The last two changes are test refactoring that lets the new test reuse the helper, so they support the objective. No generated code, testdata/openapi.yml, or unrelated implementation change appears in the diff. The shared-helper refactor changes an existing test's structure without changing its assertions, which is consistent with the stated purpose.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template and fills in the main sections. It links issue #1683 and explains what the index does and why the slow query happened. The Root cause section explains that the self-join on block_id had no covering index, so SQLite scanned every block entry for each route trip. The Testing section names a failing-on-main test and gives the expected query-plan pattern, along with before/after timings from a manual check on NJ Transit data. The checklist is fully checked. Two gaps remain. The Testing section quotes a query plan and timings, but the 'Test failing on main' claim rests on the plan the author describes rather than on a shown test run output. The 'Response comparison' section was deleted, which is allowed only if no Java-served response changed. The description does not say that this change leaves Java-served responses unchanged. Its 'What it does' section also does not call out any behavior that differs from other handlers or testdata/openapi.yml, which the template asks for. These gaps are minor. The description is mostly complete.

GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs, which trips-for-route uses to find a
route's active blocks, joins block_trip_entry to itself on block_id.
With no index there SQLite scanned every block entry for each route
trip: on NJ Transit's bus feed (33k trips) trips-for-route took 0.65 s
locally and 4-5 s in production for five trips. With the index it
takes 0.05 s. schema.sql runs at startup, so existing databases get
the index too.
The test explained a simplified self-join that omitted the trip joins
and filters of GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs, so it could pass on a
plan the real query never uses. Explain the sqlc-generated query
instead, with one value in each IN list, and require SQLite to search
route_bte by block_id through idx_block_trip_entry_block_id.

The index itself looks correct. schema.sql runs with IF NOT EXISTS at startup, so existing databases pick it up, and the new test passes in both CGO and pure-Go modes. The inline comments are about making the plan test less fragile, plus two optional follow-ups.
Spec deviations: none. This changes only the schema and a test. Response bodies for trips-for-route and the other endpoints are unchanged, so there's nothing to compare against the wiki, the Java server, or openapi.yml.
Process notes (not code issues):
The PR has the skip-template-check label, which CONTRIBUTING.md reserves for typo and broken-link fixes. The description does follow the template, so removing the label should let the "PR template" check pass on its own.
The "test failing on main" output in the description quotes SEARCH a USING INDEX idx_block_trip_entry_trip_id …, but the query now uses the aliases route_bte / active_bte. It looks like that output came from an earlier version of the test, so it's worth re-capturing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Two optional follow-ups, not blockers:
Composite index. Both queries that match on block_id also filter on service_id: GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs (route_bte.service_id / active_bte.service_id IN ...) and GetBlockTripIndexIDsForBlocks (bte.block_id IN ... AND bte.service_id IN ...). An index on (block_id, service_id) would do that filtering inside the index rather than reading each table row. The comment above also only names the first query, so the second one's dependence on this index isn't written down.
Planner statistics. Maglev never runs ANALYZE / PRAGMA optimize after a static import, so SQLite picks join orders without statistics. On a feed where one service_id covers most trips, as on NJ Transit, the plan can still start from active_bte via idx_block_trip_entry_service_id and read most active entries before narrowing to the route. Running PRAGMA optimize once after each import would help every multi-join query, not just this one. That probably belongs in a separate issue.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
5c1e5ae fixes the comment to name both queries. On RABA without statistics, GetBlockTripIndexIDsForBlocks actually plans through idx_block_trip_entry_service_id today, so whether (block_id, service_id) wins depends on planner stats. I'd do PRAGMA optimize after import as a follow-up first, then revisit the composite index.
The plan test explained the query on an empty database, rebuilt the
SQL by rewriting sqlc's slice markers with a regex, and required the
index on the route_bte alias. On real data, and after ANALYZE, SQLite
can start the self-join from route_bte and put the index on active_bte
instead, which failed the test although the index was in use.
Load the RABA feed, call the generated GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs
method through a recorder to capture its exact SQL and arguments, and
accept a block_id index search on either alias. The recorder and the
EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN scan move to query_plan_test.go so the rtree plan
test shares them.
GetBlockTripIndexIDsForBlocks also matches block_trip_entry rows by
block_id, so list it next to GetBlocksForBlockTripIndexIDs above
idx_block_trip_entry_block_id.
