What changed

  • added badges to scripting docs indicating from which module each method can be imported
  • added Claude instructions to update docs when scripting files are updated
  • added comments to explain intentional gap between modules for plugin_list and plugin_get
  • improved python docstrings
  • split add_group, add_group_setup, add_group_teardown, and add_script into their own headings

Why it changed

fill gaps

Testing strategy

built docs

Review notes

  • load_utility and start are marked with openc3.api (Ruby only) -- should confirm accuracy and verify if it is intended for these to be in openc3.api at all, add to Python if so
  • the user prompt ones are denoted as openc3.script but what would happen these were used in a script outside of script runner? seems like they should be Script Runner only
  • considering changing from Script Runner only to just Script Runner

📝 Walkthrough

The Python telemetry API now warns on deprecated calls, authorizes unique target and packet pairs during value retrieval, and includes updated documentation and type annotations. The change also adds scripting guidance, documents plugin endpoint choices, and styles documentation badges.

Changes: Scripting API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Telemetry API documentation and deprecation warnings
openc3/python/openc3/api/tlm_api.py
Docstrings clarify telemetry API arguments and return values. Deprecated functions emit FutureWarning messages and forward calls to current functions.
Telemetry value retrieval and types
openc3/python/openc3/api/tlm_api.py, openc3/python/openc3/models/cvt_model.py
get_tlm_values collects unique target and packet pairs before authorization. The API and CvtModel type annotations describe its inputs and results.
Script API guidance and plugin endpoint notes
openc3/lib/openc3/api/CLAUDE.md, openc3/lib/openc3/script/CLAUDE.md, openc3/python/openc3/api/CLAUDE.md, openc3/python/openc3/script/CLAUDE.md, openc3/lib/openc3/script/plugins.rb, openc3/python/openc3/script/plugins.py
Directory instructions name scripting guides to update. Comments describe why plugin functions use PluginsController REST endpoints and remain outside the shared API and whitelist.

Documentation badge styling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Style badges within since headings
docs.openc3.com/src/css/custom.css
Badges inside .since-heading inherit its font family, size, and weight.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs.openc3.com/src/css/custom.css: Added styling for badges inside .since-heading; the rule inherits the parent’s font family, font size, and font weight.
  • observed — Modified behavior in openc3/lib/openc3/script/plugins.rb: Added comments documenting why plugin_list and plugin_get bypass the shared API module and whitelist, and that they call PluginsController REST endpoints to provide matching Ruby and Python script results.
  • observed — Modified behavior in openc3/python/openc3/api/tlm_api.py: Adds the warnings import used by deprecated API wrappers.
  • observed — Modified behavior in openc3/python/openc3/api/tlm_api.py: Replaces tlm’s comment-style documentation with a docstring describing its calling forms, arguments, and return value; its signature is unchanged.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "docs(scripting): add badges, update parameters" names two real changes in the PR. The PR adds module-import badges to scripting documentation, and the Python docstrings are updated. The title does not mention the other main content, which includes the Claude instructions, the plugin_list and plugin_get comments, and the separate headings for add_group and related methods. It is a short, specific title that a reviewer can scan. It is not vague.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 88.89% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 27 functions across 4 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Include supported placeholders in the items type.

get_tlm_available can return None for an unavailable item. The existing loop accepts that placeholder and passes it to CvtModel. Annotate items as list[str | None] so type checking permits this supported call path.

Correct the guide paths in the API CLAUDE.md instructions.

The instruction names cosmos/docs.openc3.com/guides/scripting-api.md and cosmos/docs.openc3.com/guides/script-writing.md. Neither path exists at the repository root. The guides are at docs.openc3.com/docs/guides/. A contributor who follows the instruction cannot find either file, so the documentation update can be skipped or written to a new file at the wrong location.

The same wrong paths appear in the matching CLAUDE.md files under openc3/lib/openc3/script/, openc3/python/openc3/api/, and openc3/python/openc3/script/. Apply the same correction to each file.

Update both get_tlm_values return annotations.

When start_time is set, CvtModel.get_tlm_values returns tsdb_lookup results. Historical queries can return a flat row, nested rows, or {}. Both the model and public API annotations currently allow only nested rows.
