Moved the post debug screen to React and Shade at the existing URL and removed the Ember screen and its styles. Dates and custom refetch ranges use Temporal.

The screen opens on an overview: delivery totals, the email's recipient filter and timestamps (UTC, plus the site timezone when it differs), a checklist for batches, recipient failures and tracking settings, and a summary of the analytics jobs. Failed sends are the only error state; recipient failures and unsent batches are informational. Detail lives in tabs:

  • Failures groups recipients by provider response, with a permanent/temporary filter when both occur
  • Batches lists each batch with its provider id and full error
  • Analytics sync shows each job's progress and lag, with refetch, custom range and cancel controls

Preserved from Ember: recipient failure and batch details, email and analytics polling, refetch controls (available even when the status request fails), and author/contributor access checks.

Walkthrough

The post email debug screen moves from Ember to a lazy-loaded React route. New API types and hooks provide email batches, recipient failures, analytics status, scheduling, and cancellation. The React screen renders diagnostic data and analytics controls with authorization checks. Formatting utilities handle dates, ranges, lag, and statuses. Acceptance tests cover diagnostics, analytics actions, polling, empty states, and authorization. The previous Ember route and debug implementation are removed.

Suggested reviewers: 9larsons

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bdf3a

The migrated debug screen can fail on incompatible diagnostic data, prefill an unusable analytics range for newly sent emails, and reject malformed debug URLs through a broken filter. These issues should be resolved before merge.

Full details: Type-Safe Boundaries

Explanation

The PR adds unvalidated API response consumption. createQueryWithId returns the raw fetchApi result when parseResponse is absent (apps/admin-x-framework/src/utils/api/hooks.ts:69-81). The new useEmail, useEmailDebugBatches, useEmailRecipientFailures, and useEmailAnalyticsStatus hooks in apps/admin-x-framework/src/api/emails.ts:136-162 have no parseResponse. Their response shapes are hand-written interfaces, and the new React screen reads these responses as trusted Email, EmailDebugBatch, EmailRecipientFailure, and EmailAnalyticsStatus values. The existing Zod schemas only cover the older minimal batch and sending-status endpoints. The PR introduces no any, @ts-ignore, or @ts-nocheck; that does not remove the validation failure.

Resolution

Define Zod schemas for every new email, batch, recipient-failure, and analytics response shape. Export the corresponding types with z.infer, then pass each schema through parseResponse on the new query hooks. Ensure the post, user, and settings responses consumed by the new screen are also validated at their API boundary, or use validated query wrappers. Do not rely on TypeScript interfaces or generic fetchApi<ResponseData> types as runtime validation.

This assertion cannot fail.

emailRequests is captured at Line 222 after Line 221 already polled for a count greater than zero, so expect(emailRequests).toBeGreaterThan(0) always passes. The test name states that email status refreshes, but no assertion proves a second email request occurred.

Use an explicit handle for the debug route.

lazyPostDebugScreen satisfies lazyComponent: it imports post-debug.tsx, which exports PostDebug as the default component. emberFallbackHandle bypasses ForceUpgradeGuard, so its reuse makes the debug route reachable during force upgrade. If that access is intentional, replace it with an inline {allowInForceUpgrade: true} handle and document the policy. Otherwise, remove the handle.

Handle invalid debug timestamps

Escape postId before building the Ghost filter.

useBrowsePosts passes the raw filter to Ghost. URL encoding does not escape Ghost NQL syntax. A postId containing an apostrophe or another NQL character can make the query invalid. Use the existing escapeNqlString(postId) helper when constructing the filter.

Validate all email API responses before caching them. createQueryWithId only validates data when a hook provides parseResponse; otherwise it caches unchecked JSON. The debug hooks and useEmail omit this parser. A truthy non-array failures or batches value reaches .filter(), and invalid array elements reach property reads during rendering, which can crash the debug page. Define Zod schemas, infer the response types, and pass each schema through parseResponse, following the existing email query pattern.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Clamp the default range so begin is never after end.

end is computed as the earlier of createdAt + 7 days and now - 1 hour, without comparing it to begin. If the email was created less than one hour ago, hourAgo is earlier than begin, so the returned range is inverted.

That inverted range is prefilled into the custom-range form in overview.tsx (Line 75). The user then submits it, refetchRangeToUtc throws, and the form shows "Choose a begin date before the end date." for a range the screen itself produced. Debugging a just-sent email is the common case for this screen.

🐛 Proposed fix
-  const end =
-    Temporal.Instant.compare(weekAfterCreation, hourAgo) < 0 ? weekAfterCreation : hourAgo;
+  const candidate =
+    Temporal.Instant.compare(weekAfterCreation, hourAgo) < 0 ? weekAfterCreation : hourAgo;
+  const end = Temporal.Instant.compare(candidate, begin) > 0 ? candidate : now;

Keep email diagnostics and analytics refetch controls in React at the existing debug URL. Preserve access checks and polling, and use Temporal for UTC dates and refetch ranges.

Ember always offered Refetch Analytics and Custom Date Range, even when the
analytics status request failed. The React overview only rendered them once
status loaded, so the refetch action disappeared exactly when analytics were
broken.

The custom range prefill ended an hour ago, which is before the begin date for
an email sent within the last hour, and the form then rejected its own default.
Unparseable timestamps now render as N/A instead of throwing during render.

The header uses email_only to pick "Sent", matching Ember.

The segmented tab bar packed counts into the labels ("0 Permanent failures")
and its active state overflowed the bar. Pill tabs with TabsTriggerCount match
the count treatment used elsewhere in Admin and wrap cleanly on narrow screens.

The debug screen put every detail at the same level: tabs for each failure
type and an Overview tab holding email fields and 24 analytics rows in one
table, so answering "did this send?" meant reading all of it.

It now opens on an overview with delivery totals, the email's filter and
timestamps (UTC, plus the site timezone when it differs), and a checklist
covering batches, recipient failures, and open, click and feedback settings.
Failed sends are the only error state; recipient failures and unsent batches
are informational because some bounces are expected. Detail moves to
Failures, Batches and Analytics sync tabs. Failures group by provider
response so recipients rejected for the same reason collapse into one row.

Lag has no health thresholds because the backend defines none and the
missing-events job trails by design.
