fix: stop usePresence leaving presence on room or connection status changes - #737
usePresence with autoEnterLeave (the default) left presence in the cleanup of its auto-enter effect. That effect depends on roomStatus and connectionStatus, so the cleanup ran on every status change, not only on unmount. For example, a brief disconnection (connected -> disconnected) while the room stays attached called room.presence.leave(). After that, the hook never entered again: it had already auto-entered and the room did not go through detached. The client dropped out of the presence set, and presence.leave() also stopped running on unmount, because the latest effect run had registered a no-op cleanup.
This change moves the auto-leave into its own effect, keyed on context, logger and shouldAutoEnterLeave. The hook now leaves only when it unmounts, when the room changes, or when autoEnterLeave is turned off. It only leaves if it auto-entered the current room and leave() was not called explicitly. The leave conditions (room attached, connection active) are unchanged.
Run npx vitest run --project react-hooks test/react/hooks/use-presence.test.tsx.
The new test should not leave presence on connection status changes, only on unmount auto-enters, changes the connection status to disconnected and back to connected, checks that leave() is not called, then unmounts and checks that leave() is called once. Without the fix it fails with expected "leave" to not be called at all, but actually been called 1 times.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Presence now remains active through brief connection interruptions while the room stays attached, avoiding an unnecessary leave and repeat enter.
Leaving still occurs when the component unmounts or relevant room and auto-presence settings change, provided the user has not explicitly left.
…hanges
The auto-leave ran in the cleanup of the auto-enter effect, which re-runs on every
room or connection status change. A brief disconnection made the hook leave
presence, and because it had already auto-entered it never entered again.
Move the auto-leave into its own effect so it only runs on unmount, room change
or when autoEnterLeave is disabled.
usePresence now tracks auto-enter attempts separately from cleanup. Connection status changes no longer trigger a leave. Cleanup leaves presence only when the room and connection states and hook state meet the required conditions.

Summary
Auto-enter and cleanup lifecycle src/react/hooks/use-presence.ts, test/react/hooks/use-presence.test.tsx
The hook tracks whether it attempted auto-entry and separates cleanup from the auto-enter effect. Cleanup leaves only when the room is attached, the connection is active, auto-entry was attempted, and no explicit leave occurred. The test verifies that disconnecting and reconnecting does not leave or enter again, and that unmount triggers one leave.
Issue #736 describes usePresence leaving presence on connection status changes. This change addresses that behavior and adds a matching test.

The change avoids leaving presence during connection-status changes while preserving cleanup for the departing room. Re-enabling automatic presence still has a pre-existing limitation, but it does not block this fix.

Explanation
The title names the main change: usePresence no longer leaves presence when room or connection status changes. The raw summary confirms the auto-enter effect no longer leaves presence in its cleanup, and a separate cleanup effect now handles leaving on unmount, room change, or disabling auto-enter. The linked objectives (issue #736) match this scope. The title is specific, concise, and uses the 'fix:' convention.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #736 requires the hook to keep presence during connection-status changes and to leave on unmount instead. The auto-enter effect now has a no-op cleanup. A separate cleanup effect depends on context, logger, and shouldAutoEnterLeave, not room or connection status. It checks the attached-room and active-connection conditions before calling leave(). The added test verifies no leave and no second enter during disconnect/reconnect, then verifies one leave on unmount.

Re-enabling autoEnterLeave does not re-enter presence after a disable.
437-442: Minor · Functional Correctness · Low value
Re-enabling autoEnterLeave does not re-enter presence after a disable.
When autoEnterLeave changes from true to false, the leave effect's cleanup calls presence.leave(). The auto-enter effect does not reset hasAutoEnteredRef on that change. When the option returns to true with the room still attached, shouldAutoEnter evaluates to false, so the hook does not re-enter. Reset hasAutoEnteredRef when auto-enter is disabled, or otherwise make re-enable re-enter after an automatic leave.

Review comment at @src/react/hooks/use-presence.ts around lines 437 - 442:
Update the auto-enter effect in usePresence around shouldAutoEnterLeave so
disabling autoEnterLeave clears hasAutoEnteredRef after the automatic leave;
when autoEnterLeave is re-enabled while the room remains attached,
shouldAutoEnter can then trigger presence.enter() again.
