ADFA-6894: Offer Install for .cgt files in the editor file tab - #2213
The editor's file-tab Install action now also appears for .cgt template collections (it appeared only for .apk and .cgp). ADFA-4934 already handles a .cgt opened from another app through ExternalFileInstallActivity; the gap was inside the app.
Change
InstallFileAction.kt: one pure, case-insensitive installKindFor(File?) (APK, PLUGIN, TEMPLATE) used by both prepare() and doAction(), so visibility and behaviour cannot drift apart.
For .cgt, doAction() starts ExternalFileInstallActivity with an explicit VIEW intent carrying a FileProvider content:// Uri and a read grant (templateInstallIntent). This reuses the confirm, name-conflict and rename dialogs from ADFA-4934; calling TemplateCollectionRepository directly was rejected because it would duplicate them.
KDoc on ExternalFileInstallActivity and ExternalFileInstallViewModel now mentions the editor entry point.
Decisions taken (open questions Q1 to Q4 in the plan, unanswered)
Tapping a .cgt still opens the read-only archive listing; Install is an action on that tab, as for .apk/.cgp.
The label stays "Install" (action_install).
Manifest intent filters are unchanged. The open-from-another-app path was not reproduced here, so it was not touched.
Verification
InstallFileActionTest (4 tests, new) and ExternalFileInstallViewModelTest (19, one added) pass: :app:testV8DebugUnitTest, run with --offline.
Red check: with the .cgt mapping and the intent's data and grant flag removed, two of the four new tests fail (cgt maps to TEMPLATE in any case, template install intent targets ... FileProvider uri and read grant). The .cgp/.apk and non-installable-extension tests, and the added view-model test, pin existing behaviour and pass either way.
spotlessCheck passes (the push hook ran it).
Siblings checked
Other .cgt dispatch sites already include cgt and were left alone: FileTreeActionHandler.isArchive, CodeEditorView.ARCHIVE_EXTENSIONS, EditorHandlerActivity (line 1678). Not checked: the ManagerScreen picker.
Not done
No device run yet: Install then Cancel then Install again on the singleTask activity, and font scale 1.0 and 2.0 (the dialogs are unchanged, no new screen). Both are in Steps to QA.
A single installKindFor(file) now decides visibility (prepare) and the action
(doAction). For .cgt, doAction launches ExternalFileInstallActivity with a
FileProvider content Uri so the existing confirm/conflict/rename dialogs run.
KDoc on the activity and ViewModel now mentions the editor entry point.

Summary
Added .cgt support to the editor file-tab Install action. The action launches ExternalFileInstallActivity with an ACTION_VIEW intent, a FileProvider content URI, and read access.
Added case-insensitive install-kind mapping for .apk, .cgp, and .cgt. Unsupported files return false.
Added tests for install-kind mapping, intent construction, .cgt handling, and launch failure behavior. Added view-model coverage for installing a temporary copy while preserving the source file.
The author reports that :app:testV8DebugUnitTest --offline and spotlessCheck pass. Device testing and the ManagerScreen picker check remain pending. Current review findings and severity counts are unavailable.
Risk: The flow depends on FileProvider URI access and ExternalFileInstallActivity handling the granted URI. Device-level behavior is not established by the supplied evidence.
The editor’s Install action now recognizes .cgt files and opens ExternalFileInstallActivity with a read-granted FileProvider URI. Tests cover extension matching, intent properties, launch failures, and ViewModel handling of a .cgt URI.
Changes: Template Install Handoff
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Recognize and route installable files app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/actions/file/InstallFileAction.kt
The action maps APK, plugin archive, and template archive extensions to install kinds without regard to case. It uses those kinds for visibility and dispatch. For template archives, it starts ExternalFileInstallActivity with a read-granted FileProvider URI. It returns false and displays an error if launch fails.
Validate and document the handoff app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/actions/file/InstallFileActionTest.kt, app/src/test/java/com/itsaky/androidide/viewmodels/ExternalFileInstallViewModelTest.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/ExternalFileInstallActivity.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/activities/ExternalFileInstallScreen.kt, app/src/main/java/com/itsaky/androidide/viewmodels/ExternalFileInstallViewModel.kt, app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml
Tests cover install-kind matching, intent properties, visibility, launch outcomes, and .cgt handling through a FileProvider URI. The activity, screen, ViewModel, and manifest comments now identify the editor Install action as an input path.
appdevforall/CodeOnTheGo#2177: Adds another .cgt entry point that uses ExternalFileInstallActivity and the template confirmation flow.

…the view-model test
- A FileProvider or launch failure now flashes the shared "could not read" error and returns
false instead of crashing the editor, as the APK and plugin branches already report failures.
- InstallKind, installKindFor and templateInstallIntent are internal: one caller, no reason to
widen the module's public surface.
- The FileProvider view-model test now checks that the repository inspected a copy holding the
source file's bytes, instead of asserting only the Uri scheme.

1
Install may use stale on-disk bytes if the .cgt tab has unsaved changes.
Not applicable: cgt is in ARCHIVE_EXTENSIONS (CodeEditorView, EditorHandlerActivity), so the tab is a read-only archive listing with no unsaved buffer.
2
startActivity/FileProvider.getUriForFile is unguarded and can throw.
Fixed. IllegalArgumentException and ActivityNotFoundException now flash the shared "could not read" error and return false, as the APK and plugin branches report failures. The provider declares root-path, so this is defensive; it has no unit test (it needs a live EditorHandlerActivity).
3
The editor path copies the whole .cgt into filesDir/incoming.
Accepted. This is the cost of reusing ADFA-4934's dialogs and conflict handling instead of a second install path (the plan rejected calling TemplateCollectionRepository directly). The copy is temporary and swept by InstallTempFiles; template collections are small.
4
A repeat Install tap on the same Uri is dropped by LastValueGate in the singleTask activity.
Not a bug: a live instance is showing the dialog for that Uri, and the tap brings it to the front. Cancel and install-success finish the activity, so the next tap creates a fresh instance (Steps to QA covers Install, Cancel, Install).
5
The plugin and template flows diverge; the null -> branch is dead.
The plugin flow is pre-existing and left alone. The null -> branch is required: when over a nullable enum must be exhaustive.
6
InstallKind, installKindFor, templateInstallIntent are public for one caller.
Fixed: all three are internal.
7
No tests for prepare()/doAction() wiring.
Not added. These need a live EditorHandlerActivity; the sibling CreateLinkActionTest follows the same pure-half convention. The wiring is covered by Steps to QA.
8
The view-model test asserts trivia (uri.scheme).
Fixed: it now captures the file the repository inspected and asserts it holds the source file's bytes, and was renamed to say so.
InstallFileActionTest (4) and ExternalFileInstallViewModelTest (19) pass after the changes.

Independent review (Opus 5.5, xhigh)
I formed this review before reading CodeRabbit, the self-review or the replies, and read those afterwards only to avoid repeating them. There are no Critical or High findings. The .cgt branch is correct as written, and the refactor keeps .apk and .cgp behaviour the same. The open items are ticket completeness and two tests that do not pin what they are named for.

High on the wiring
F01: ticket completeness (Medium). The ticket says "Opening a CGT file doesn't do anything. Instead, it should open in Code On the Go, triggering the installation dialog." This PR adds Install to the file-tab menu, which appears only when the already-selected tab is tapped again (BaseEditorActivity.onTabReselected -> ActionMenuUtils.showPopupWindow). Opening a .cgt still shows the archive listing. The open-from-another-app path is unchanged and was not reproduced. The plan on the ticket lists "Q1-Q4 answered on this ticket; design review done" and "The reporter's way of opening a .cgt shows the install dialog" under Definition of done. The PR body says Q1 to Q4 are unanswered. Recommendation: settle Q1 on the ticket before QA. If the report came from the file tree, Q2 decides whether this PR closes the ticket. If it came from another app, this PR does not address it.
F06: the editor is hidden while the dialog is up (Low).ExternalFileInstallActivity uses Theme.AndroidIDE (Material3, with no windowIsTranslucent anywhere in its chain). Its ComposeView draws nothing but the dialogs. Tapping Install therefore replaces the editor with a blank full-screen surface until the dialog closes. That is acceptable for a file opened from another app; from the editor it is a visible context switch. ManagerScreen.kt:201 already hosts ExternalFileInstallDialogs in place, with its own ExternalFileInstallViewModel (PluginManagerActivity.kt:39-41). That is a precedent if QA or product wants the editor to stay visible. Separately, I agree with the reply to CodeRabbit: I found no route that leaves an instance of this singleTask activity below the editor. It has the default affinity, so it is pushed onto the editor's task, and cancel, error and success all finish it.
F07: help for Install (Low, pre-existing).ActionMenuUtils.kt:94-99 wires the long-press on every file-tab item to the one TooltipTag.EDITOR_FILE_CLOSE_OPTIONS, so Install has no help of its own. This PR widens what Install does (APK, plugin, and now template collection). The copy of documentation.db on this machine has only Close text for that topic. That copy is gitignored, its LastChange is 2025-09-05, and it may be stale. Under REVIEW.md §9, a follow-up ticket for an Install tooltip is warranted; the change does not belong in this PR.
Sibling sweep. None of these needs the same change:
FileTreeActionHandler.kt:78, CodeEditorView.kt:101 and EditorHandlerActivity.kt:1678 are as the PR body says.
ManagerScreen.kt:182-191 (listed as "Not checked") already sends a picked .cgt to ExternalFileInstallViewModel.onReceived, which is the same flow.
OpenWithAction.kt:57 (file tree, not listed) sends ACTION_VIEW with type */* and a FileProvider Uri. An intent typed */* matches any filter that declares a type (IntentFilter.findMimeType). Reading the manifest, the chooser for a .cgt should therefore already offer this app's install activity. I have not verified this on a device, but it bears on Q1 and is worth one QA line.
PR description. I found nothing untrue at a2f401a. Checked: the 4 + 19 tests pass, Spotless passes, and installKindFor drives both prepare() and doAction(). The red-check claim matches the code; I confirmed it by reading, not by re-running a mutation.

F01
§1 Exceptions
The new launch path is caught (F04). Deleted or unreadable source: FileProvider.query still returns DISPLAY_NAME, the copy then fails inside the view model's catch (e: Exception), the user sees "Could not read the file", and the activity finishes. A corrupt archive shows msg_template_invalid_file.
§2 Leaks
No new register, listener or scope. LeakCanary not run (no device in this review).
§3 Threading
The action runs on the UI thread (requiresUIThread = true), and getUriForFile canonicalizes the path there. In the android-36 sources that reaches BlockGuard only on the canon-cache path, which is off by default, so no StrictMode hit is expected. Copy and inspect run on Dispatchers.IO.
§4 Security
No new exported surface. The intent uses an explicit component and the app's own provider Uri. The view model re-validates the extension from DISPLAY_NAME, and installCollection reserves the core name.
§5 Tests
:app:testV8DebugUnitTest for both classes at a2f401a: 4/4 and 19/19 pass. See F02 and F03. JaCoCo not run.
§7 Quality
Reuses ADFA-4934's flow with no duplication. See F04 and F05.
§8 A11y / font scale
No new views or strings, and the dialogs are unchanged. Font scale is in Steps to QA.
§9 Help
F07
§10 Architecture
No module, DI or state-shape change. The action sends an explicit intent within :app.
§13 Plugins
No plugin API surface touched.
Launch / task
singleTask with the default affinity: the activity is pushed onto the editor's task. configChanges handles rotation and other configuration changes. After process death, onReceived runs again in a fresh view model, and a Uri from the app's own provider needs no grant. Double tap: the popup dismisses on click, and singleTask plus LastValueGate drop the repeat.
- InstallFileActionTest now drives prepare() and execAction() against a mocked
EditorHandlerActivity (the SlotBusyBuildActionsTest pattern): Install is visible for .cgt in
any case and hidden for other files, a tap starts ExternalFileInstallActivity with the
FileProvider Uri, and a failed launch flashes the error and returns false. With prepare()
reverted and the TEMPLATE branch returning false, three of the seven tests fail.
- The view-model test now follows the flow through installCollection, stubbed to delete the
file it is given as the real repository does, and asserts the editor's own file survives
while the temp copy is consumed.
- The launch failure is logged with its cause; the comment now says the guard is defensive
(the provider declares a root-path).
- The doc comments on the install screen, its manifest entry and the activity mention the
editor entry point.

Replies to the review's body findings (F01, F06, F07); F02 to F05 are answered inline and fixed in c5194a0.
F01 (does the PR meet the ticket): open question, not settled by this PR. The PR adds Install for a .cgt in the editor's file-tab menu; it does not change what happens when a .cgt is opened from the file tree or another app (the reviewer's reading is that "Open with" may already reach the install screen). Which entry point the ticket's reporter meant (Q1) needs the reporter's answer before QA, and I have asked for it outside this thread. I have not assumed it.
F06 (blank screen behind the dialog): acknowledged. The install activity has the same look for files opened from other apps (ADFA-4934). Making it translucent, or showing the dialogs in place as ManagerScreen does, is a product and design call that touches the external path too, so it is not in this PR; flagged for the ticket owner.
F07 (no tooltip of its own for Install): pre-existing and out of scope for this change. A follow-up ticket is proposed; none has been created.
