error message instead of empty download #15

Open

Description

@epageperron

cdli export --host https://cdli.earth/ --entities artifacts --format atf --output-file file.atf works but is not the correct way to get the atf so the user needs to wait for all the artefacts to have been queried to realise there are 0 results. Let's have an error message instead, can be given for other similar scenarios.

    Hi @epageperron, I'd like to work on this issue.

    My proposed approach:

    • Identify all cases where a format/entity combination returns empty or
      invalid results
    • Add clear, descriptive error messages to guide users toward the
      correct approach
    • Handle similar edge cases consistently across export and search commands

    I'm currently contributing to the CDLI framework as a GSoC 2026
    applicant. Would you be happy to assign this to me?
