what

adds examples/standalone-static/ (docker compose + a default.conf.template override) showing how to run the nginx image with no BACKEND, serving static content directly, plus a short README pointer.

why

closes #61. the image is reverse-proxy-only by default (default.conf.template always includes includes/proxy_backend.conf), which is why running it with no backend returns 502/404. no code change is needed for standalone use — the documented template-override mechanism (README.md, "mount your local file as the new template") already covers it, as @zapovit demonstrated on the issue. this just turns that into a working, tested example.

verified locally: docker compose up in the example dir serves the static index.html with 200, and a SQLi payload (?id=1' OR '1'='1) gets blocked 403 by rule 942100 (libinjection) — confirming ModSecurity/CRS still runs on the static-serving path.

refs

ai disclosure

  • tools used: Claude Code (gh cli, docker compose)
  • assisted with: drafting the example template/compose file and README wording
  • review performed: ran the example end-to-end locally (static 200, SQLi payload blocked 403 via rule 942100); confirmed no other consumer of location_common.conf.template depends on a backend

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a standalone static-site example served through the ModSecurity CRS Nginx image, with no backend service. It includes a demo page, a ready-to-use container setup, and commands to start the example and check a request, including a request that demonstrates ModSecurity blocking suspicious input.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for configuring standalone mode when no proxy backend is available, including a link to the example setup and instructions for serving files directly.

Closes coreruleset#61. The default templates always proxy to BACKEND; overriding
default.conf.template to drop the proxy_backend.conf include lets the
image serve static content directly, as demonstrated by @zapovit on
the issue.

Explanation

The PR body includes ## ai disclosure, ## what, ## why, and ## refs. The disclosure is inadequate because **tools used** says Claude Code (gh cli, docker compose) but does not name the model and version required by the policy. The reviewed commits also contain prohibited attribution trailers: Co-authored-by: coderabbitai[bot]... and Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5....

Resolution

Update the PR body so **tools used** names the model and version, while retaining the concrete assistance and review details. Amend or rewrite the reviewed commit messages to remove both Co-Authored-By/Co-authored-by trailers and any AI-tool signature lines.

Full details: Owasp Security (Web, Api & Llm)

Explanation

WARNING: examples/standalone-static/docker-compose.yaml:15 pulls the mutable owasp/modsecurity-crs:nginx-alpine rolling tag without a digest. The repository identifies nginx-alpine as a rolling tag and states that rolling tags should not be used in production (README.md:33-45); its stable tags include a CRS version and date (README.md:17-31). Each later docker compose up can therefore run unreviewed image contents, which matches the Software and Data Integrity Failure condition for missing integrity verification of externally fetched content. CRS rule ID and paranoia level are not applicable; the affected variable is the Compose image reference.

Resolution

Pin the image to an approved stable CRS version/date tag and its verified immutable digest, for example owasp/modsecurity-crs:<approved-version>-nginx-alpine-<date>@sha256:<verified-digest>. Verify the digest in review or CI and update it through a controlled dependency process.

Full details: Unpinned Dependencies & Actions

Explanation

⚠️ WARNING: The changed Docker Compose example uses owasp/modsecurity-crs:nginx-alpine without a content digest at examples/standalone-static/docker-compose.yaml:15. The named tag can move, so the example is not reproducible under the Docker pinning rule.

Make the access scope explicit.

"8080:8080" intentionally supports remote access for a static site. However, localhost does not imply loopback-only binding. Add a note for users who want local-only access.
