vpn: retry TUN bring-up under a new adapter name on Wintun identity collision - #649
Conversation
An orphaned Wintun devnode permanently wedges the Windows tunnel. sing-tun
derives the adapter GUID from md5("wintun"+name), and sing-box picks that name
by scanning *present* interfaces -- which an orphan is not. So the name stays
tun0, the GUID stays the same, CreateAdapter fails ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS and the
OpenAdapter fallback fails ERROR_NOT_FOUND. Every reconnect recomputes the
identical colliding identity, so the toggle can never recover: reinstalling
doesn't help either, since nothing in lantern or radiance removes the devnode.
Retry bring-up under an explicit InterfaceName when that collision is seen.
Gated on os.ErrExist plus the "create adapter" wrap so it stays narrow. In
particular engineering#3854 -- where the device is created and then fails to
enable (ERROR_SET_NOT_FOUND) -- is not an existence error and does not retry;
that path burns wintun's fixed 15s WaitForInterface budget per attempt, which
is exactly the latency regression #3854 warned an identity-mutating fix would
cause.

…d it Renaming the adapter steps past the orphan but leaves it on the host, so the user keeps a dead devnode and pays a failed bring-up on every connect. Remove it via SetupAPI DIF_REMOVE so the canonical tun0 identity keeps working, and fall back to the rename only when the devnode won't come out. Three rails must all hold before anything is removed: the devnode carries wintun's hardware ID, it holds a GUID one of our candidate names derives, and it is not started. A live adapter is never touched, so a WireGuard or Tailscale adapter -- which are also Wintun -- cannot be caught by this. Cleanup is best effort and never fatal. A devnode wedged badly enough to reject DIF_REMOVE (CR_INVALID_DEVNODE, seen on the engineering#3854 host) just falls through to the identity retry. The GUID derivation must stay byte-identical to sing-tun's generateGUIDByDeviceName or cleanup silently matches nothing, so it is pinned against golden md5 digests in a cross-platform test. …ng around it" This reverts commit 301273a. The cleanup matched devnodes by NetCfgInstanceId, but wintun 0.14.1 uses the requested GUID as the SwDevice instance ID (SWD\Wintun\{GUID}) and never sets NetCfgInstanceId, so it would have removed nothing. Fixing the key would not help either: wintun already runs its own orphan sweep after every create and close -- enumerating SWD\Wintun including non-present devnodes and removing them with the same DIF_REMOVE call. A host that stays wedged is one where that removal fails, and an identical call from here would fail the same way, while racing wintun's worker outside its device-installation mutex. The status check also failed open for a destructive action, and the cleanup's continue skipped a retry name. …ments Retry names were tunN, the scheme every sing-box-based client uses. sing-tun falls back to opening an existing adapter by name, so a retry landing on another app's live tunN would try to take it over. Use lanternN instead; nothing in radiance depends on the tunN pattern. TestSetTUNInterfaceName built its options from baseInbounds(), which under -tags novpn is a mixed inbound, so the test failed in that build. Build the TUN inbound directly. Bring comments in line with the repo's comment policy: drop ticket and file:line references and narration, keep only contracts, and state that setTUNInterfaceName mutates the caller's options in place. The wording no longer claims the conflicting device is an orphan, which isn't established. Problem
Windows users hit a dead connect toggle:
That is
ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS(183) from wintun'sCreateAdapter, thenERROR_NOT_FOUND(1168) from sing-tun'sOpenAdapterfallback.sing-tun derives the adapter GUID from the name (
md5("wintun"+name)), and wintun uses that GUID as the device instance ID (SWD\Wintun\{GUID}). radiance sets noInterfaceName, so sing-box pickstun0every time, and every connect produces the same identity. Once a device holding that identity exists but isn't a present adapter namedtun0, create and open both fail, again and again. What is confirmed vs. inferred:
CreateAdapterfails before wintun's 15s interface wait (at stub-device creation).SWD\Wintundevnodes after every create and close (AdapterCleanupOrphanedDevices), so a plain phantom devnode should clear on its own. A host that stays stuck is either one where that removal fails, or one with a present device at that identity (for example, still held by a long-livedLanternSvc). BindingWintunSetLoggerwould settle this, because wintun logs the exact failing step and we currently discard it.sequenceDiagram autonumber participant R as radiance<br/>vpn/vpn.go participant SB as sing-box tun inbound<br/>inbound.go @ v1.13.19-lantern participant ST as sing-tun v0.8.12<br/>tun_windows.go participant W as wintun.dll 0.14.1<br/>adapter.c R->>SB: vpn.go:191<br/>t.start → boxInstance.Start Note over SB: inbound.go:301<br/>no InterfaceName → CalculateInterfaceName → tun0 SB->>ST: inbound.go:360<br/>tun.New Note over ST: tun_windows.go:636<br/>GUID = md5 of wintun + tun0 ⚠️ rect rgba(255, 200, 200, 0.3) ST->>W: tun_windows.go:44<br/>CreateAdapter tun0, GUID Note over W: adapter.c:608<br/>GUID becomes the device instance ID W-->>ST: ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS 183<br/>a device with this identity exists 🐛 ST->>W: tun_windows.go:50<br/>OpenAdapter tun0 W-->>ST: ERROR_NOT_FOUND 1168<br/>no present adapter named tun0 end ST-->>R: tun_windows.go:52 → inbound.go:365<br/>create adapter + open existing adapter Note over R: same name, same GUID on every connect rect rgba(200, 255, 200, 0.3) R->>SB: retry with InterfaceName lantern1 SB->>ST: tun.New lantern1 ST->>W: CreateAdapter lantern1, new GUID W-->>ST: created ✅ endFix
On that specific collision, retry bring-up with an explicit
InterfaceName(lantern1,lantern2,lantern3). A new name means a new GUID and a new instance ID, so the retry doesn't depend on which state the conflicting device is in.errors.Is(err, os.ErrExist)plus sing-tun'screate adapterwrap. An adapter that was created and then failed to come up (errno 1170, engineering#3854) is not an existence error, so it never retries. Renaming couldn't help there, and each attempt would cost wintun's full 15s wait.lantern*names, nottunN: other sing-box-based clients usetunN. sing-tun'sOpenAdapterfallback would open another app's live adapter if a retry landed on its name. Nothing in radiance depends on thetunNpattern.VPNClient.startalready builds a freshtunnelper call, andtunnel.startcloses itself on failure, so retries don't leak a box. At most 4 bring-ups, with 3 retries. Why there's no devnode cleanup
An earlier commit here removed the conflicting devnode with SetupAPI
DIF_REMOVE. It's reverted in this PR:NetCfgInstanceId, which wintun never sets from the requested GUID, so it would have removed nothing.DIF_REMOVEcall. Where wintun's removal fails, ours would fail the same way, while racing wintun's worker outside its device-installation mutex.Testing

Not run on a Windows host. The retry path is exercised only through its helpers, and nobody has watched it recover a real machine showing this error.
Follow-ups
WintunSetLogger(sing-tun fork) so the failing wintun step is logged. This is the cheapest way to find out what the conflicting device actually is.tun0again.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
