This fixes settings migration and save-failure handling, and account bugs that could restore, mix up or lose an identity.
The settings rule: a change takes effect only once it's saved. Every radiance file shares one data directory, so a failed save almost always means all saves are failing, and a restart would restore the old values anyway. The only exception is startup inputs, which are recomputed on every run.
Settings
Migration runs once per install, gated by a .settings-migrated marker that's written only after the adopted identity is saved. Previously it ran on every start and brought logged-out accounts back.
It adopts only identity and auth keys (user_id, token, user_level, email, device_id, jwt_token, oauth_login, oauth_provider), and clears the current user's keys when switching users.
Candidates must parse as JSON objects. Without a Pro candidate, only one with a user_id can win, so a defaults-only file never outranks a legacy account.
An unreadable candidate leaves the migration pending.
The live UI's %PUBLIC%\Lantern\data\settings.json is no longer a candidate.
Set, Patch and Clear stage on a copy, save, then make the change live. On failure the old values remain. Unchanged writes are skipped, and changes made before InitSettings stay in memory.
settings.Apply keeps values in memory even if the save fails. It's used only for startup inputs: paths, device ID, locale, time zone and telemetry consent. A revoked consent always takes effect, and a failed startup save never stops the backend.
Diff no longer panics on slices or maps, and GetAllFor omits unset keys.
On Windows, atomicfile no longer deletes the target before renaming. The delete could lose both copies.
Account
Save errors reach the caller.ClearUser now returns an error. Login, Logout, DeleteAccount, OAuthLoginCallback, NewUser and FetchUserData pass save failures on, and Logout/DeleteAccount say when the server side already succeeded.
Stale user-data responses from before an account change are discarded with ErrAccountChanged.
An account switch is one save that never exposes an account without an ID. Login includes its OAuth-flag reset in that save.
Purchase/restore switches to the purchasing account, unless the account may have changed mid-request or the save fails. The purchase result is returned either way.
Device-limited login stores the returned device list.
Referral V1 decodes JSON; it previously decoded protobuf and always failed.
Salt: one storeSalt path. Recovery stores the new salt only for the current account, a purchaser switch clears the old salt, and SignUp caches its salt only after its identity is saved.
OAuth flags are cleared on ClearUser, SignUp, Login and a purchaser switch.
UserData is returned as a copy, not the stored value.
The pro server's HTTP 200 error envelope is checked once, in sendProRequest.
Behavior changes for review
A failed settings save no longer changes memory, except for startup inputs. If a save fails during logout or deletion, the session stays on the old account and the error says the server side succeeded.
The first start on this build re-adopts a legacy identity for installs that logged out on an older build, as main does on every start. After that, a logout sticks.
FetchUserData and NewUser can return ErrAccountChanged (retryable).
An HTTP 200 error envelope is now an error on every pro endpoint, including RemoveDevice, SubscriptionPlans and ActivationCode.
API: new settings.Apply, settings.UserKeys and account.ErrAccountChanged; Client.ClearUser now returns an error.
lantern-core still applies the purchase/restore switch through PatchSettings. That's now redundant but safe, and a lantern-core follow-up can remove it.
Testing
go test ./... and -race on account and common pass. The shipped-tags and novpn builds and GOOS=windows go vet are clean.
New tests cover:
migration: retry, malformed and unreadable files, OAuth state, a defaults-only canonical file, no resurrection;
saving: save-failure behavior for each settings write path, and skipped writes;
account: stale-response and account-switch races, failed saves during login, logout, deletion, signup and purchase, device-limit login, recovery salt, and the error envelope.
The read-only-directory settings tests skip on Windows and as root.
The backend tests already fail in shuffled order on main, because a fixture leaves its settings path set.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Account changes are handled more consistently during sign-in, refresh, recovery, and subscription verification, reducing the chance of stale account data overwriting newer choices.
Subscription and device requests now surface errors returned by the service.
Invalid OAuth callbacks receive a clear client error.
Settings updates are more reliable when saving fails, and legacy account settings can be recovered during migration.
New Features
Account settings can be updated together, with related account data refreshed when the account changes.
Settings:
- Run the legacy settings migration once, gated by a .settings-migrated
marker. Adopt only the winning candidate's identity and auth keys; a
non-pro candidate wins only with a user_id; an unreadable candidate
leaves the migration pending. Stop reading the Windows cross-dir
settings.json.
- Set and Patch take effect only after a successful save. Clear and the
new Apply keep in-memory changes when the save fails. Skip writes the
file already holds; changes before InitSettings stay in memory.
- Diff uses reflect.DeepEqual; GetAllFor omits unset keys.
- Startup settings are written once, through Apply, in common.Init and
NewLocalBackend.
- atomicfile no longer removes the target before renaming on Windows.
Account:
- Discard user-data and purchase responses requested before the account
changed (ErrAccountChanged).
- An account switch is one write that never exposes an empty identity.
- Store the device list from a device-limited login.
- Decode the referral v1 response as JSON.
- One storeSalt path; recovery stores the new salt only for the current
account; a purchaser switch clears the salt and OAuth flags.
- Clear the OAuth flags on ClearUser, SignUp and Login.
- Return copies of UserData rather than the stored value.
- Check the pro-server error envelope once, in sendProRequest.
- Switch to the purchasing account inside account on purchase/restore.
Every radiance file lives in one data directory, so a failed save almost
always means every save fails, and a restart would restore the old
values anyway. Use one policy: a settings change takes effect only once
it is saved.
- settings.Clear stages its removal like Patch; on error the previous
values remain.
- settings.Apply, which keeps changes in memory when the save fails, is
used only for startup inputs recomputed every run (paths, device ID,
locale, time zone, telemetry consent).
- Account operations return save errors instead of logging them:
ClearUser now returns an error, and Login, Logout, DeleteAccount,
OAuthLoginCallback, NewUser and FetchUserData pass it on. Logout and
DeleteAccount say when the server side already succeeded.
- An account switch is one Patch; Login folds its OAuth-flag reset into
the login save.
- A purchaser switch that fails to save keeps the old account and salt.
- SignUp caches the new salt only after its identity is saved.

Walkthrough
The change revises settings persistence and legacy identity migration, coordinates account updates through generation-checked storage, and connects backend settings patches and subscription responses to account identity handling. It also changes Pro API error-envelope handling and OAuth invalid-token HTTP status.

Summary
Settings persistence and startup behavior common/settings/settings.go, common/settings/settings_test.go, common/init.go, backend/radiance.go
Settings writes now distinguish retained in-memory updates from writes that leave the prior snapshot unchanged after failure. Startup applies settings through the retained-write path. Tests cover write failures, reloads, and unchanged writes.
Initialization selects identity fields from eligible legacy candidates and records migration completion. Legacy YAML and Windows cross-directory discovery use host-profile checks and revised candidate rules.
Account operations update identity, user data, and salt through locked storage paths. Generation checks reject stale responses. Backend account-setting patches use the account client, and invalid OAuth tokens return HTTP 400. Tests cover account switching, persistence failures, and in-flight requests.
Verification and restoration can store a purchaser identity when the captured generation remains current. Pro requests return non-empty JSON error envelopes as errors; selected decoded response handlers no longer check embedded error fields.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review b660a
This change reworks settings persistence and account identity handling. Two small problems remain. After signup, the saved password salt can be missing or stale following a restart, which can affect password verification or account deletion. Two permission-based tests would also fail when run as root in CI. Both fixes are small and local, so the change is mergeable once they are addressed or accepted.

Explanation
The title "persisted identity and account correctness" matches the main theme of the changeset. The PR covers settings persistence and migration (identity keys, Apply, atomic saves) and account handling (stale response discarding with ErrAccountChanged, atomic account switching, save error propagation). The title is short and specific enough for a reviewer to see the primary change. It is somewhat broad and uses the abstract word "correctness", so it does not name the migration or the Apply API directly, but it refers to real aspects of the change and is not vague or generic.

- Route PatchSettings patches that touch user keys through the new
account.Client.PatchAccountSettings, which saves them as an account
change so pending user-data and purchase responses for the previous
account are discarded.
- SignUp saves its identity and caches its salt in one locked section,
so a concurrent account switch can't receive the signup salt.
- Password recovery holds the account lock across the current-email
check and the salt write.

🟡 Changes recommended
Account patches can retain another user's credentials, and login and OAuth completion still permit inconsistent account state during concurrent changes.
Prevent stale salt writes after concurrent account switches
account/user.go:313
setData releases a.mu before storeSalt reacquires it. A verify/restore request started in that gap can switch to purchaser B and clear the salt, after which Login writes account A's salt into B's cache and salt file. getSalt returns the cached salt without checking the email, so subsequent password proofs use the wrong salt. Commit the login identity and salt under the same lock, leaving the salt unchanged if the identity save fails.
OAuthLoginCallback fetches user data with the token's credentials and
saves the account in one write, discarding it if another account change
landed meanwhile. PatchAccountSettings detects a switch, clears the
previous account, skips unchanged values, and rejects invalid user IDs.
CompleteChangeEmail saves only to the account that requested it.
An unreadable legacy file now counts as missing instead of leaving the
migration pending, and any settings.json holding a JSON object wins,
matching main's rule.
