Follows #945, in the same lane: bun-webkit-linux-arm64-lto-hardened. No other lane changes.

What it does

Branch target identification (BTI, ARMv8.5) is the forward half of what pac-ret is the backward half of. In a guarded page, an indirect branch (BR, BLR) must land on a landing pad, or the processor traps. So a corrupted function pointer or jump table can no longer send execution into the middle of code.

With ENABLE(BRANCH_TARGET_IDENTIFICATION):

  • LLInt, IPInt and everything the JITs generate begin with a landing pad wherever an indirect branch can reach them.
  • JavaScriptCore guards the pages of those itself, with mprotect(… | PROT_BTI): the JIT's reservation when it is made, LLInt's three sections in LLInt::initialize().
  • --useBranchTargetIdentification=0 leaves them unguarded.

A landing pad is a hint, so the binary still runs on ARMv8.0, and nothing is guarded where the processor or the kernel has no BTI: the mprotect() fails there.

What it does not do

The pages of C++ are not guarded. The loader guards an executable only if everything it is linked from says it has landing pads. In the lanes' arm64 sysroot (glibc 2.31, gcc 13) nothing does: crt1.o, crti.o, crtbeginS.o, libc_nonshared.a, libstdc++.a, libgcc.a. C++ is compiled with -mbranch-protection=pac-ret+bti all the same, and has to be: with it the compiler has the target of an indirect tail call in x16 or x17 (br x2 becomes br x16), and a jump with its target in any other register may not land on what a function begins with. So whatever calls LLInt or JIT code by an address needs the flag, what an embedder links with these libraries included. For guarding the pages of C++ two things are left: the sysroot, and the functions written in assembly in a C++ source (ctiMasmProbeTrampoline, the thunks of defineUnaryDoubleOpWrapper, currentStackPointer), which have no landing pad. lanes.mjs says so.

Not -mbranch-protection=standard: that also declares the code fit for a shadow stack (GCS), which what unwinds and replaces frames here is not.

Not the lanes with the ahead-of-time compiler, which is not ready for it: whether an image has landing pads is yet to be decided. The two together are an #error, and LANDING_PADS is a key of its own in lanes.mjs, so that a lane does not get it along with SIGNED_RETURN_ADDRESSES.

How

One rule for jumps. BR through x16 or x17 may land where a call may (BTI c, PACIBSP); through any other register only on BTI j. So every indirect jump goes through x16: farJump(RegisterID) moves its target there (the four other overloads did already), and so does offlineasm's jmp. A jmp through memory loads it there, so LLInt's step from one bytecode to the next is ldr x16, […], br x16: as many instructions as before. A function's entry then needs nothing: it begins with PACIBSP, from #945.

The exception is IPInt's dispatch from handler to handler. Its handlers are in slots of 128 bytes, and 30 of them have room for one more instruction, not for two. So that jump stays one instruction, and the slots begin with BTI j. Nothing calls a handler, so an indirect call cannot land on one.

All JIT code begins with a landing pad by itself: MacroAssemblerARM64's constructor emits it. There are 126 places that assemble a thunk or a stub, and upstream adds more. The two kinds of code that do not want it take it away (removeLandingPadAtStart()): what is patched into a slot of other code (InlineAccess, JITMathIC), and the handlers of data ICs, below.

In the middle of code, a landing pad at:

LLInt, IPInt every label but a local one, from asm.rb; the labels of one place share it
Baseline, LOL every bytecode (an OSR exit, a switch or a throw can go on at any), the arity check
DFG blocks that are OSR or catch entries or follow a Switch, the arity check, exits that are exception handlers
FTL, B3 blocks whose address a patchpoint has and entrypoints but the first (in both of Air's generators), the arity check, the OSR entry, exit thunks
ICs a handler's m_jumpTarget, the makeshift catch handler
Yarr where backtracking returns to
BBQ jump tables, loop entries, catch entries

Three that took more than a line:

  • DFG's OSR exit entrances are an array with a fixed stride. The ones that genericUnwind() can jump to get a landing pad and a jump of their own behind the array, which stays as it is.
  • A data IC handler has a second entry, m_jumpTarget, at a fixed number of bytes behind the first. It is now PACIBSP, BTI j, body: a call costs nothing more, a jump from the handler before it one hint.
  • LLInt's sections begin and end on 64 KB, the largest page that Linux has on arm64, because only whole pages can be guarded and what shares a page may have no landing pads. That is 192 KB of padding in this lane's jsc.

What keeps it true

  • Tools/Scripts/check-landing-pads.py, behind the link in the lane: every label of LLInt in the symbol table has a landing pad behind it, and where a slot of IPInt begins it is BTI j and nothing else. 2443 of 2443, 750 of them slots. On a build without the switch it fails and names them, and so it does with one slot patched to BTI c. It needs no test to get there.
  • --validateIndirectBranchTargets=1, which CI sets for this lane: LinkBuffer crashes where finished code does not begin with a landing pad, or the address of a label is taken with a tag that means an indirect branch and there is none at it. It needs no processor with BTI, and finds what no test branches to.
  • stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js (mustCrash!): $vm.callIntoLLInt() and $vm.callIntoJITCode() call code that is a landing pad and a ret, behind the landing pad.
  • stress/bun-indirect-branch-to-landing-pad-returns.js: the same calls to the landing pad return, guarded or not. So it is where the test above calls that ends it.
  • stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-without-guard.js: the same branches with the option off do no harm. So it is the guard that ends the test above.
  • The test job says whether its runner has BTI, and warns if this lane's has not. Where it has, the job fails unless jsc says that the pages are guarded: the test above crashes by itself where nothing is guarded, so that it passes in every other lane, and that must not hide a guard that is missing.
  • ENABLE(MPROTECT_RX_TO_RWX) with this is an #error: it would take the guard off again without a sound. So is this without ENABLE(JIT), which would not link.
  • farJump(RegisterID) takes x16 the way the other overloads do, so it asserts where the scratch registers are not to be used.

How I tested it

On hardware: oven-sh/bun#47554 links a preview build of this branch into a hardened Bun, with Bun's own C, C++ and Rust compiled with pac-ret+bti, and runs all of Bun's tests on machines that have BTI and pointer authentication. It is not to be merged. In its build #136294, with the preview build of 122e5da and Bun's main, as in #136209 with that of 5657fba, #136171 with that of 139856b and #136123 with that of be1718b:

  • All 20 shards print paca and bti from /proc/cpuinfo.
  • /proc/self/smaps has bt on 448 KB of the executable, which are LLInt's three sections of 64, 192 and 192 KB, and on a mapping of 512 MB without a file, the JIT's reservation. On none with --useBranchTargetIdentification=0.
  • A call of llint_landing_pad_and_return through bun:ffi returns. A call of its second instruction is SIGILL, Illegal instruction at address 0x…1110. With the option off that call returns too.
  • 6548 test files ran, and that SIGILL is the only one in the logs. Nine of them have WebAssembly in their names, so of IPInt's slots this says less than the emulator does, below. Four test files fail, none with a signal of the processor's: one panics about an overflow in bun fmt, and three read the table of built-ins of the ahead-of-time compiler, which is empty in a Bun that is built without it, as this one is.

In this repository's CI nothing is enforced: no arm64 runner that the test job has got so far has BTI, and the job warns about it. The first ones had no pointer authentication either. Those of 139856b, 5657fba and 122e5da had. What CI adds is the build with LTO, with both scripts on its jsc, and all of run-javascriptcore-tests (125,000 runs) with --validateIndirectBranchTargets. That job had one failure at a6c2f61, below, and has passed since be1718b. All 85 checks pass at 122e5da. Before the merge two did not, for tests of testaot on x64 that failed on main as well: a comment below has them.

Under an emulator: everything below is qemu-aarch64 -cpu neoverse-n2, which has both features and enforces both, with a build of this branch with the lane's flags but for LTO.

tests mode ran exit with 0 hits
JSTests/stress default 6236 6076 2
eager (thresholds of 10 and 20, no concurrent JIT) 6236 6073 2
--useDFGJIT=0 6236 6040 2

--useJIT=0 974 926 0
eager, --defaultB3OptLevel=0 974 910 0
JSTests/wasm/v8, less what is marked skip default 100 100 0
eager 100 100 0
--useJIT=0 100 100 0
eager, --defaultB3OptLevel=0 100 100 0

All of it is of 139856b. At 5657fba, which changes the 750 landing pads of IPInt's slots and nothing else, I ran the rows of JSTests/wasm and JSTests/wasm/v8 and the first and the fourth of JSTests/stress again, with the same hits. The 2 are the tests that must crash: the one above, and #945's bun-return-address-with-wrong-signature-is-not-returned-to.js.

A hit is a trap or a failed --validateIndirectBranchTargets. My runner takes the options of a test's first runDefault or requireOptions line, gives it 90 seconds, and looks at nothing but the exit code. It is not run-javascriptcore-tests: tests fail in it for want of their options or of time.

For wrong results, not only traps, at a6c2f61 I built the same tree without the switch and ran every test that did not exit with 0 on it too. 18 of them ended differently:

  • 4 are the new test in its four modes: it traps here, and crashes by itself there.
  • 12 end alike when both are run again with 400 seconds: they had run out of time, or are among the next.
  • 2 segfault now and then on both, regress-153522603.js in 48 of 600 runs here and 51 of 600 there, bigint-terminate-divide.js in 1 of 60 on each.

So do five more, at like rates on both: ftl-osr-failure-clear-twice.js, string-replace-speculate-string.js, get-array-length-concurrently-change-mode.js, try-get-value-without-gc.js (7 of 40 here, 9 of 40 there), slice-termination-exception.js (40 of 40 on each, 20 at a time). The first does on -cpu neoverse-n1 as well, which has neither feature. All seven set --watchdog. I have not looked at whether it is the emulator.

After the changes of the review, below, I compared each row with the same row before them. 61 runs ended differently. 52 had run out of time or segfaulted before and exit with 0 now: the machine was busier then. Of the 9 others, 3 are the two tests just named, 5 ran out of time and exit with 0 alone with 400 seconds, and one is marked skip and ends as it does without the switch. What offlineasm generates did not change: the three sections disassemble to the same instructions before and after.

After the merge with main, 122e5da, which has #942 in it. It merges without a conflict. Of what generates code, #942 changes B3, Air and Yarr. I read what it adds there for an address that is stored or an indirect jump, and found none: YarrJIT.cpp gets one more direct jump. Then ten of the rows again, with the 10 tests of JSTests/stress that #942 adds:

tests mode ran exit with 0 hits
JSTests/stress default 6246 6084 2
eager 6246 6084 2
--useDFGJIT=0 6246 6048 2
--useJIT=0 6246 6027 2
eager, --defaultB3OptLevel=0 6246 6087 2
JSTests/wasm default 974 932 0
eager 974 909 0
--useJIT=0 974 926 0
eager, --defaultB3OptLevel=0 974 909 0
JSTests/wasm/v8 eager 100 100 0

138 runs ended differently than in the same row before, 132 of them with 0 where they had not. Of the 6 others, 4 exit with 0 in 10 of 10 runs alone, and get-array-length-concurrently-change-mode.js, named above, in 8 of 10. vm-termination-deadline.js, which ends a call by a timer as --watchdog does, segfaults in 10 of 10 runs alone: here, with the pages not guarded, on neoverse-n1, on the tree before the merge without the switch, and on a build of #968, which is main and has no landing pads. It passes in the test job. Three of the 10 new tests ran out of time in every row. They run the interpreter of regular expressions with its validation on. Two end with 0 in 5 to 10 minutes, and as slowly without the switch. One does not end in 9 minutes with or without it.

Both scripts, the guarded pages and testmasm are as before the merge.

testmasm, which no lane with landing pads builds: all of it passes, on neoverse-n2 with the pages guarded and on neoverse-n1, with the check on. testb3 and testair do not compile with ENABLE_AOT=0, with or without this PR.

Page sizes, with QEMU_PAGESIZE: with 4, 16 and 64 KB both $vm.pagesOf…AreGuarded() say true and the test traps, in LLInt and in JIT code.

Tools/Scripts/check-signed-return-addresses.py still passes: 49849 functions sign at 122e5da, 15 are on the list.

What the runs found

  • Air has a second generator, for optimization level 0, which I had not seen. The review found it, and so did CI: wasm/stress/exception-thrown-from-call.js sets --wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0 and failed --validateIndirectBranchTargets, the one failure of that job. Under the emulator it traps. My runner did not read runDefaultWasm(…) lines, so it had run the test without the option. With --defaultB3OptLevel=0, 104 of 400 tests with a catch or a switch failed the check before 1b28c65, and none after.
  • With pages of 16 or 64 KB LLInt was not guarded whole, and its smallest section not at all. The review found that.
  • setPolicy() and four tests of testmasm took a new assembler for empty. The review found that too.
  • op_super_sampler_begin had no landing pad. It begins with a globaladdr, which is an #if OS(DARWIN) … #elif OS(LINUX), and the landing pad went into the first branch. That is what the script is for now.
  • Baseline begins with a nop half of the time, at random, and code that is no function is called at that label. The filler is a landing pad now, which does nothing either.
  • My own landing pad at the start moved m_jumpTarget onto PACIBSP, which signed the return address twice.

What another review found

Four readings of 0049a51, for correctness, regressions, conventions and what could be simpler. None found an indirect branch without the landing pad that it needs, or anything that changes with the switch off: in 12 configurations LLIntAssembly.h is the same but for three lines, the #if at its head, a comment and a hash. What came of them is in the last three commits:

  • check-landing-pads.py took any landing pad for any label, so a slot of IPInt with BTI c would have passed it and trapped on hardware.
  • farJump(RegisterID) wrote to x16 without asking whether it may.
  • Nothing showed that a call to the landing pad returns with the guard, so a trap there would have passed for the one that the test is about.
  • The bounds of the sections were aligned behind a spacer, which cost 64 KB where a section begins: 128 KB less now.
  • jmpToHandler, an opcode that I had made up, was no terminal instruction for arm64CheckNoFallThrough. It is gone: all of it is one pass now, and when "jmp" is upstream's again.
  • Less code: DFGOSRExitCompilationInfo.h and LLIntPCRanges.h are no longer touched, guardExecutablePages() leaves it to the kernel to say that there is no BTI, one call of the check in LinkBuffer in place of three, one landing pad in emitCatchPrologue() in place of three before it.
  • Two warnings about & with bool.

And of the review of those commits: the slots of IPInt began with BTI jc, because the second label of a slot counted as one that may be called. They begin with BTI j since 5657fba.

Not measured

Speed and code size. Baseline pays the most: one hint for every bytecode.

Generated by Claude Code

…on Linux arm64

With ENABLE(BRANCH_TARGET_IDENTIFICATION), LLInt, IPInt and what the JITs generate begin with a
landing pad wherever an indirect branch can reach them, and JavaScriptCore guards their pages
(PROT_BTI): an indirect branch to anywhere else in them traps. A landing pad is a hint, so the
binary still runs on ARMv8.0, and nothing is guarded on a processor without the feature or with
--useBranchTargetIdentification=0.

It goes with ENABLE(RETURN_ADDRESS_SIGNING), in the same lane, linux-arm64-lto-hardened: what a
function signs its return address with is the landing pad that it begins with.

The pages of C++ are not guarded. The loader does that only if everything an executable is linked
from has landing pads, and nothing in the lanes' sysroot has.

* An indirect jump has its target in x16, so that it may land where a call may. IPInt's jump from
one handler to the next stays as it is, and lands on a landing pad for jumps.
* All JIT code begins with a landing pad by itself (MacroAssemblerARM64's constructor), but for
code that replaces a part of other code and for the handlers of data ICs.
* offlineasm puts one behind every label but a local one.
* The JITs put one where the address of a label is taken for an indirect branch.
* LLInt's three sections begin and end on a page.

Tools/Scripts/check-landing-pads.py checks LLInt's labels in the finished binary, and
--validateIndirectBranchTargets checks JIT code as it is linked. CI runs both for the lane.

Add the same landing pad guard to the opt-level-zero entrypoint path.

The normal path marks nonzero entrypoints with indirectCallTarget() before their prologue. The opt-level-zero loop does not. A nonzero FTL catch entrypoint can then be reached through the indirect farJump in jumpToExceptionHandler, and on BTI-guarded pages that jump can fault. This can occur whenever opt-level-zero code is generated for FTL catch entrypoints. Adding the same guard keeps this path consistent with AirGenerate.cpp.

Both jobs pass since 122e5da, the merge with main at 4d45755 (#942), and with them all 85 checks. What follows is about the commits before it.

Two test jobs are red at a6c2f61, and not from this PR: Test bun-webkit-linux-amd64-lto-aot and Test bun-webkit-linux-amd64-lto-hardened-aot.

What fails: native tests of testaot, on x64 only. Everything that run-javascriptcore-tests runs besides reports 0 failures in both jobs.

saved-frame/frames-between-job-and-async-generator-body-are-written
unwritten word 88 bytes below frame record 5 of 160 bytes, in a function without an exported name
ASSERTION FAILED: !numberOfUnwrittenWords
aot/tests/AOTSavedFrameTests.cpp(1028)

-hardened-aot has saved-frame/frames-between-job-and-compiled-code-are-written as well.

Why it is not this PR's: the same jobs fail on main at 4db1b25, which this branch starts from, with the same tests and the same counts (8147 passed, 1 failed; 8149 passed, 2 failed). I compared the logs of all four jobs.

commit of main the two jobs
4db1b25 (#781) red
f2755b0 (#945) red
e669162 (#943) red
7aede06 (#934) red
a7b59e6 green

For the three in the middle I looked at the result of the jobs, not at which tests failed.

A fix: I found none on main or in an open PR, and have none to propose: I have not looked into which function leaves the word unwritten. I did not run the jobs again.

They have been red for the same tests, with the same counts, at every push since: be1718b, 0049a51, 139856b, 5657fba.

One more at 5657fba, in Test bun-webkit-linux-amd64-lto-aot

stress/new-largeish-contiguous-array-with-size.js.ram-size-10000000
Exception: Error: heap too big before forced GC: 14549208

Why it is not this PR's: 5657fba changes five lines of asm.rb that do something only with BRANCH_TARGET_IDENTIFICATION, and a Python script. For x64 LLIntAssembly.h differs from that of 139856b in nothing but the hash of its input, and the test passed in this job there and at the three pushes before. What it checks is how large the heap has grown with 10 MB of RAM before a collection is forced, which depends on when the collector's own thread gets to run.

I ran the job again, once: the test passed, with 0 failures in all that run-javascriptcore-tests runs but testaot. It also passed at this commit in Test bun-webkit-linux-amd64-lto-hardened-aot.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether routing every register farJump and offlineasm jmp through x16 could clobber a live value: x16 is the ARM64 macro assembler's dataTempRegister (never register-allocated, and invalidateAllTempRegisters() is called before the move) and offlineasm's ARM64_EXTRA_GPRS[0], a per-instruction temporary, so nothing holds a value there across a jump.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds BTI landing pads across the ARM64 assembler, LinkBuffer validation, offlineasm lowering, LLInt page guarding, and every JIT tier plus Yarr and BBQ, gated behind ENABLE(BRANCH_TARGET_IDENTIFICATION) for one Linux arm64 lane. It touches code-generation and executable-memory protection, which is security-relevant. Four confirmed findings are posted inline, including a B3 optLevel 0 gap, a testmasm/testb3 crash, and a page-size assumption, so a human review is already signalled; this note only records the x16 clobber concern examined and ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 Source/JavaScriptCore/b3/air/AirGenerate.cpp — Wasm or JS compiled by B3 at optimization level 0 traps on BTI hardware when an exception is caught, and crashes at link with --validateIndirectBranchTargets=1. AirGenerate.cpp:569 sends optLevel 0 code to GenerateAndAllocateRegisters::generate, which emits no landing pad at entrypoints after the first nor at patchpoint block labels, unlike AirGenerate.cpp:439 and :458. Fix: give the O0 generator the same indirectJumpTarget() and indirectCallTarget() emission, covering catch entrypoints, loop OSR entrypoints and Switch jump tables. JSTests/wasm/stress/exception-thrown-from-call.js runs with --wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0, and CI exports JSC_validateIndirectBranchTargets=1. [also at: Source/JavaScriptCore/b3/air/AirAllocateRegistersAndStackAndGenerateCode.cpp:627 - Wasm run with --wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0 (or FTL with --defaultB3OptLevel=0) on BTI hardware traps when an exception reaches an OMG catch handler, and with JSC_validateIndirectBranchTargets=1 crashes at link time.]

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: any B3 procedure with optLevel 0, i.e. --wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0 or --defaultB3OptLevel=0, whose function has a try/catch, a loop OSR entrypoint or a Switch lowered to a jump table. AirGenerate.cpp:566-569 routes such code to GenerateAndAllocateRegisters. That generator sets every shared block label at AirAllocateRegistersAndStackAndGenerateCode.cpp:617 and runs the prologue of every entrypoint at :627 without emitting indirectJumpTarget() or indirectCallTarget(). With Options::validateIndirectBranchTargets() the new check at LinkBuffer.cpp:82-111 sees an instruction that is not hint 27, 34 or 36 and calls CRASH() while linking. Without the option, on a processor with BTI, BR x16 to the catch entrypoint raises SIGILL. On the base branch the same code runs normally. JSTests/wasm/stress/exception-thrown-from-call.js:1 runs with --wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0 and its .wat has try/catch_all; ci.yml:476 exports JSC_validateIndirectBranchTargets=1, so the test job hits the CRASH. The O2 generator got landing pads at AirGenerate.cpp:439 and :458; nothing covers the O0 generator.

Verification: AirGenerate.cpp:566-569 routes code.optLevel()==0 to code.m_generateAndAllocateRegisters->generate(jit). In AirAllocateRegistersAndStackAndGenerateCode.cpp:612-627 the O0 generator sets *context.blockLabels[block] = label and runs prologueGeneratorForEntrypoint(*entrypointIndex) with no landing pad emitted at either place. The base branch has no BTI guard, so this crash is introduced by the PR.

  • 🟡 JSTests/stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js — nit: the new test prints to the terminal on every run even though nothing has failed yet, which the JSTests rules forbid. JSTests/README.md rule 4 says not to print or log unless a test is about to fail, and JSTests/stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js:16 prints "It returns from the landing pad." unconditionally before the expected crash. Fix: drop the print, or turn the first call into an assertion that throws if it does not return, so the test is silent on its expected path.

    Why this was flagged

Every run of JSTests/stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js, in both of its run modes (JSTests/stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js:3-4), reaches the print at line 16 after call(false) returns and before call(true) traps. JSTests/README.md rule 4 (imported by JSTests/CLAUDE.md) says tests must not print or log unless they are about to fail. The output of the parallel runner is one shared pipe, and ci.yml at .github/workflows/ci.yml:505 tees that whole output into jsc-tests.log, so this line is noise added to every test run with no diagnostic value when the run succeeds. The base branch has no such test; this is a style rule slip, not a functional defect.

Verification: The print is reached on every run, on the expected path, before the intended crash. /home/claude/webkit/JSTests/stress/bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js line 16 is print("It returns from the landing pad.");, unconditional, before call(true); (line 17), expected to trap. /home/claude/webkit/JSTests/README.md line 22 reads "4. Don't print or log unless a test is about to fail."

…ails where nothing is guarded

GenerateAndAllocateRegisters::generate() is a generator of its own. It now puts a landing pad where
generateWithAlreadyAllocatedRegisters() does: at the entrypoints but the first, and at the blocks that
follow a patchpoint. wasm/stress/exception-thrown-from-call.js, which sets --wasmOMGOptimizationLevel=0,
failed --validateIndirectBranchTargets in CI, and traps where the pages are guarded.

The test of the guard crashes by itself where nothing is guarded, so that it passes in every other lane.
So that this cannot hide a guard that is missing, the test job asks jsc whether the pages are guarded
where the lane has landing pads and the runner has the feature.

The test prints nothing where it is not about to fail.
… passes with landing pads

The bounds of LLInt's sections were where a page of 4 KB begins. With larger pages guardExecutablePages()
left out what shares a page with something else, which was all of the smallest section. They are now
where a page of 64 KB begins, the largest that Linux has on arm64, which costs 320 KB of padding. And
guardExecutablePages() says that the pages are guarded only if all of them are.

setPolicy() expected an assembler without code, and all code begins with a landing pad now. No lane
with landing pads calls it yet: the callers are the ahead-of-time compiler, testmasm and testb3.

Four tests of testmasm took a new assembler for empty. The three that only look at what was emitted
take the landing pad away, and testAddressLog asks a label for the offset.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

The two issues I raised on the previous push are addressed in be1718b: setPolicy() now allows the one landing-pad word and testmasm strips it where it counts bytes (AbstractMacroAssembler.h:931, testmasm.cpp:623/10253/10815), and the LLInt section bounds are 64 KB-aligned with guardExecutablePages() reporting false unless it covered [start, end) whole (LowLevelInterpreter.cpp:488, ExecutableAllocator.cpp:583-597), so pagesOfLLIntAreGuarded stays truthful on 16 K and 64 K kernels. Beyond the inline nit, I also checked that the new ENABLE(MPROTECT_RX_TO_RWX) #error guards against the RX/RWX toggle silently dropping PROT_BTI. Given the size of the change and that CI is its first run on real BTI hardware, a human look is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...

The PR adds BTI landing pads across LLInt, offlineasm, every JIT tier, ICs, Yarr and BBQ, plus mprotect(PROT_BTI) guarding of the JIT reservation and LLInt sections, a LinkBuffer validator, a CI lane flag, a symbol-table checker script and two stress tests, about 565 lines over 42 files. It is security-hardening code in the assembler and executable-memory layer, so it is a security-sensitive surface. Both findings from the prior review were fixed by the latest commit; the one remaining finding is a configure-time nit about ENABLE_JIT=OFF builds failing to link. The breadth of the change and the author's own note that CI is the first run on hardware are why this is a defer rather than an approve.

Comment thread Source/WTF/wtf/PlatformEnable.h Resolved
…efused without the JIT or with the compiler

LANDING_PADS went with every variant that has SIGNED_RETURN_ADDRESSES. A lane with the ahead-of-time
compiler that gets the one would have got the other with it, and nobody has tried that. It is a key of
its own now, and ENABLE(BRANCH_TARGET_IDENTIFICATION) with ENABLE(AOT) is an #error.

So it is without ENABLE(JIT), which did not link: guardExecutablePages() is a part of the JIT's allocator.

The flags of the one lane that has landing pads are what they were.

Emit the call landing pad at entryLabel unconditionally.

When the random branch is skipped, m_arityCheck still points to entryLabel, but the branch emits no indirectCallTarget(). On ARM64 with BTI enabled, an indirect caller can therefore enter the function prologue without BTI c.

Move indirectCallTarget() outside the random branch, or emit it immediately after entryLabel before the conditional code.

Emit BTI c at entryLabel.

On the two findings of this review about entryLabel in JIT.cpp and LOLJIT.cpp, which have no thread: both stay as they are. There is a landing pad at entryLabel either way.

  • Where the random branch is not taken, entryLabel is the first instruction of emitFunctionPrologue(), which on ARM64 is tagReturnAddress() (AssemblyHelpers.h:416): PACIBSP.
  • PACIBSP is a landing pad by itself, for BLR and for BR through x16 or x17, which is every indirect branch that gets there. That is why a function's entry needs nothing more, as the description says under "One rule for jumps".
  • It is always there: ENABLE(BRANCH_TARGET_IDENTIFICATION) without ENABLE(RETURN_ADDRESS_SIGNING) is an #error.
  • Only the nop in front of it was in the way, and that is what the branch replaces.

--validateIndirectBranchTargets checks this very address, locationOf<JSEntryPtrTag>(m_arityCheck), each time Baseline compiles code that is no function, and takes PACIBSP for a landing pad. It passed in the 125,000 runs of Test bun-webkit-linux-arm64-lto-hardened at be1718b, and the same code ran with the pages guarded in the runs under the emulator.

Code review completed

Nothing new to post: everything this review found is already covered by existing comments on this pull request or didn't merit a separate one.

dylan-conway pushed a commit to oven-sh/bun that referenced this pull request Oct 31, 2026
WEBKIT_VERSION is the preview build of oven-sh/WebKit#965. The hardened Linux arm64 lane compiles C and C++
with -mbranch-protection=pac-ret+bti and Rust with -Zbranch-protection=bti,pac-ret, runs every test again and
prints whether the processor has branch target identification. It is the only lane: the others do not build
with this WebKit.

The new test reads from /proc/self/smaps whether the pages of LLInt and of JIT code are guarded, and calls
past a landing pad through bun:ffi: SIGILL with the guard, SIGTRAP without.
No instruction of LLInt changes, and nothing changes without the switch.

offlineasm: all of what jumps need is in arm64LowerJumpsForLandingPads. jmpToHandler is gone, which was no
terminal instruction for arm64CheckNoFallThrough, and 'when "jmp"' is as it was. In asm.rb the two kinds of
landing pad are the numbers of their hints, which are BTI jc together, and what putStr() does anyway is not
done before it.

farJump(RegisterID) takes x16 from getCachedDataTempRegisterIDAndInvalidate(), like the other overloads, so it
asserts where the scratch registers are not to be used.

guardExecutablePages() leaves it to mprotect() to fail where there is no branch target identification or the
start is not that of a page. The rounding was from before the bounds were on 64 KB.

The bounds of LLInt's sections are aligned without the spacer of OFFLINE_ASM_ALIGN_TRAP(), which cost 64 KB
where a section begins. jsc is 128 KB smaller.

LinkBuffer checks the start of code in finalizeCodeWithoutDisassemblyImpl(), which both ways of finalizing go
through. DFG's exception handlers take the place of m_replacementDestination. Air's generator for optimization
level 0 looks at the predecessors of a block. BBQ's catch entrypoints get their landing pad in
emitCatchPrologue(). Yarr's linkTo() leaves it to takeBacktracksToJumpList(). dumpCacheSizesAndCrash() has no
caller. DFGOSRExitCompilationInfo.h and LLIntPCRanges.h are as they were.

Every "// Bun" says why. What is refused at compile time is all in PlatformEnable.h. The functions of $vm come
behind the three of return address signing, and read their argument like the others in the file. No more
warnings about & with bool in LLIntData.cpp.
…est calls the landing pad itself

The script took any landing pad for any label. The jump from one handler of IPInt to the next has its target
in any register, so where a slot begins it has to be a landing pad for jumps: with BTI c there, the script
passed and the processor would trap. Such a label is called _validate, and there are 750 of them.

It says so in a line that begins with "error:" if llvm-nm or llvm-objdump fails, and names no more than 200
labels, like check-signed-return-addresses.py.

bun-indirect-branch-past-landing-pad-traps.js called the landing pad first, and a trap there would have passed
for the one that the test is about. bun-indirect-branch-to-landing-pad-returns.js does that now, and has to
return. The test throws where it called quit(). The test without the guard does not crash, so it is not
skipped on Windows.
…of it

C++ needs -mbranch-protection=bti although its pages are not guarded: with it the compiler has the target of
an indirect tail call in x16 or x17, and a jump with its target in any other register may not land on what a
function begins with. That goes for what an embedder links with these libraries too.

CLAUDE.md did not say that LANDING_PADS is a setting of its own, or that the test job fails where the runner
has branch target identification and the pages are not guarded.

…hing else

A slot has two labels, its own and the handler's. The second counted as a label that may be called, so the two
together made BTI jc, and an indirect call could land on each of the 750 handlers. Nothing calls one: C++ takes
their addresses to check where they are, and the assembly to add to them and jump. What comes behind the label
of a slot in the same place is another name for the handler.

Not by the name of the label: ipint_entry and its like are called.
