Problem

Fix

  • $vm.callWithTerminationAtTrapCheck(fn, n) calls fn with a termination requested. The VM takes it at the n-th trap check of the call. The function withdraws it when the call ends (VM::cancelTermination()) and returns whether it was taken. A loop over n stops an operation at each of its exception checks in turn.
  • $vm.moduleLoaderLoadSync({ loader }, specifier) calls loadModuleSync() for a loader from $vm.createModuleLoader().
  • Verified: JSTests/stress/vm-termination-at-trap-check.js and module-loader-load-sync.js on a debug build, also with --validateExceptionChecks=true.

Background

  • A trap is a request that the VM thread handles at its next poll (VMTraps::handleTraps()). A termination is one kind of trap.
  • Side data (VM::ensureSideData()) is a per-VM map for state that few VMs have. The count is there, so VM and VMTraps keep their layout.
  • The walk runs with --useJIT=0: code from the optimizing JITs polls less, or not at all.

Downsides

  • VMTraps::handleTraps() gets one branch, for a termination on a VM that has side data: +126 B (1,805 to 1,931 B). VM::hasExceptionsAfterHandlingTraps(), which each poll enters, is unchanged.
  • .text of jsc: +2,816 B. The two functions exist only under --useDollarVM=1.
Notes

Sizes: llvm-size and llvm-nm --print-size on bin/jsc of bun-webkit-linux-amd64-lto-aot (the flavor that Bun links), main 115632d against this head. On bun-webkit-linux-amd64-lto: .text +4,384 B, handleTraps() +102 B. There loadModuleSync() and drainSynchronousModuleQueue() also grow (+357 B, +506 B), because jsc had no caller of them before.

This PR is the first step of #966, which is reworked on top of it (#976 is the second step). The self-review of #966 asked for this split: every stock build can then run the walk.

The walk is deterministic only for native code and the interpreter. A function has more trap checks while its inline caches are empty, and code from the optimizing JITs polls less or not at all. So the tests run with --useJIT=0 and call the function a few times before they walk it.

…t the n-th trap check

A termination begins at a trap check. Native code has one at each
RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION, so a termination can end an operation between any two
of its steps. $vm.callWithTimeLimit() reaches only the steps that are slow
enough for a timer.

$vm.callWithTerminationAtTrapCheck(fn, n) calls fn with a termination
requested, and the VM takes it at the n-th trap check of the call. The
termination is withdrawn when the call ends (VM::cancelTermination()), as
an embedder does for a time limit. The function returns whether the
termination was taken. A test walks n from 1 until the call is not cut,
and so stops the operation at each of its exception checks in turn.

The count is side data of the VM (VM::ensureSideData()). VMTraps and VM
keep their layout, and VMTraps::handleTraps() looks for the count only
when a termination is requested on a VM that has side data.

The places of the trap checks are fixed for native code and for the
interpreter. The optimizing JITs poll less or not at all, so a walk runs
with --useJIT=0.

Test: JSTests/stress/vm-termination-at-trap-check.js
…s module load, from the shell

JSModuleLoader::loadModuleSync() loads, links and evaluates a module graph
before it returns. Bun calls it for require() of an ES module. The jsc
shell had no caller, so no JSTests test ran the synchronous queue of the
loader (VM::SynchronousModuleQueueScope, drainSynchronousModuleQueue()).

$vm.moduleLoaderLoadSync() calls it for a loader from
$vm.createModuleLoader(), next to $vm.moduleLoaderImport(). It returns the
namespace object, throws what the load failed with, and throws a TypeError
for a load that did not finish (a top-level await).

Test: JSTests/stress/module-loader-load-sync.js

Status

This PR adds test hooks only. How to check it:

  • jsc --useDollarVM=1 --useJIT=0 JSTests/stress/vm-termination-at-trap-check.js
  • jsc --useDollarVM=1 JSTests/stress/module-loader-load-sync.js

Both pass on a debug build of this branch, also with --validateExceptionChecks=true, and on the release builds that CI made for it (about 20 ms and 10 ms on linux amd64 lto). On main both fail, because the two $vm functions do not exist there.

CI is green. The windows-arm64 lane failed once at actions/checkout and passed when it ran again.

Next steps: #976 and #966 are stacked on this PR.

Walkthrough

The change adds a Bun-only synchronous module-loader operation and a test hook for termination at a selected VM trap check. Stress tests cover module loading, termination behavior, and argument validation.

Changes

Synchronous Module Loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Synchronous module-loader API
Source/JavaScriptCore/tools/JSDollarVM.cpp
The Bun-only host function resolves the specifier relative to the caller and invokes synchronous module loading. It returns the namespace for a fulfilled load, throws the rejection reason for a rejected load, and throws a TypeError for a pending load or missing module record.
Module-loader behavior and fixtures
JSTests/stress/module-loader-load-sync.js, JSTests/stress/resources/module-loader-load-sync/*
The fixtures record evaluation, export values, throw an error, or use top-level await. The test checks dependency evaluation, module reuse, dynamic-import settlement, and error cases.

Trap-Check Termination

Layer / File(s) Summary
VM trap-check counter
Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/VMTraps.h, Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/VMTraps.cpp
VM side data stores a termination-check count. Trap handling decrements the count and defers handling NeedTermination while the count remains nonzero.
Termination test hook
Source/JavaScriptCore/tools/JSDollarVM.cpp
$vm.callWithTerminationAtTrapCheck(fn, n) validates arguments, requests termination at a selected trap check, and clears the count and termination request after the call.
Termination behavior and validation
JSTests/stress/vm-termination-at-trap-check.js
The stress test checks termination during JavaScript and native operations, cleanup of pending termination, exception behavior, time limits, and invalid arguments.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 094b9

This change adds test-only JavaScriptCore hooks for walking termination points and for synchronous module loading. Normal production behavior is unaffected. The known caveats apply only to unusual test-hook use, such as nesting calls or combining the hook with deadlines or Atomics.wait. There is no material merge risk.

Use testLoopCount for the post-call sanity loop.

nothingLeftBehind() runs the fixed loop after each walk() step. Although the loop checks correctness rather than forcing tier-up, its iteration count can be controlled by the configured test count. Keep the check bounded and derive the expected sum from the selected count.

🟡 (optional) A test that walks a termination inside a time-limited call hangs instead of ending with "timed out", because the new hook withdraws the enclosing limit's termination for good. functionCallWithTerminationAtTrapCheck calls vm.cancelTermination() at JSDollarVM.cpp:2865 without the re-request loop that functionCallWithTimeLimit runs over TimeLimitedCalls.active at JSDollarVM.cpp:2826. The reverse nesting fails the same way: a callWithTimeLimit inside the walked function clears the walk's own request at JSDollarVM.cpp:2824. Fix: make each hook's withdrawal re-arm any termination that still belongs to an enclosing hook, e.g. one shared withdraw helper that re-fires when an active deadline didFire() or the trap-check count is still pending, covering both nestings. [also at: Source/JavaScriptCore/tools/JSDollarVM.cpp:2824 - A walk that puts $vm.callWithTimeLimit inside the walked function gets a catchable RangeError "timed out" or a hang instead of a true/false result.]

Why this was flagged

A test runs $vm.callWithTimeLimit(() => { for (;;) $vm.callWithTerminationAtTrapCheck(() => {}, 1); }, 10). After 10 ms TerminationDeadlineSet::timerFired (TerminationDeadline.cpp:92-98) marks the deadline fired, removes it, and calls notifyNeedTermination() exactly once. The pending NeedTermination bit is taken at the next inner call's first trap check (or the inner call's own request is), and JSDollarVM.cpp:2865 calls vm.cancelTermination(), which clears the trap bit, the exception and the request flag (VM.cpp:1422-1437). Nothing re-fires it: the deadline is gone from m_deadlines and the inner hook never looks at TimeLimitedCalls.active, so the for (;;) never ends and the test hangs until the harness kills it. On the base branch only functionCallWithTimeLimit withdraws terminations, and it re-requests one for an enclosing deadline that didFire() (JSDollarVM.cpp:2826-2831), so nested limited calls still end with "timed out".

Verification: VM::cancelTermination() (Source/JavaScriptCore/runtime/VM.cpp:1427-1435) clears the single NeedTermination trap bit, the pending termination exception and m_hasTerminationRequest. functionCallWithTimeLimit honors that contract with its re-request loop over calls.active at JSDollarVM.cpp:2826-2831; the new hook has no such loop and does not look at TimeLimitedCalls at all.

🟡 nit (optional): on an assertions build, calling $vm.moduleLoaderLoadSync from code whose source origin is not a file URL (an $.agent.start worker, jsc.cpp:3273) crashes on ASSERT(url.protocolIsFile()) at jsc.cpp:1430, where $vm.moduleLoaderImport rejects with a clean Error. JSDollarVM.cpp:4477-4478 hands the caller's origin string straight to loader->resolve, skipping the protocolIsFile() check that moduleLoaderImportModule makes at jsc.cpp:1340. Fix: reject a non-file caller origin with a TypeError before resolving, or route through the same validated path, for every origin shape the shell makes (worker names, builtin:// URLs, an empty origin).

Why this was flagged

A worker started with $.agent.start(source) runs its script with SourceOrigin(URL({ }, workerPath)) where workerPath defaults to "worker" (jsc.cpp:3244, jsc.cpp:3273), an invalid, non-file URL; --useDollarVM=1 gives that global a $vm too. If that script calls $vm.moduleLoaderLoadSync(loader, "./x.js"), JSDollarVM.cpp:4477 builds the referrer as jsString(vm, callFrame->callerSourceOrigin(vm).url().string()), i.e. "worker", and JSDollarVM.cpp:4478 passes it to loader->resolve. GlobalObject::moduleLoaderResolve takes the string branch at jsc.cpp:1429 and hits ASSERT(url.protocolIsFile()) at jsc.cpp:1430: an assertions build aborts; a release build reaches resolvePath and throws "Could not resolve the referrer's path: worker". $vm.moduleLoaderImport with the same caller goes through importModule to moduleLoaderImportModule, which checks referrer.protocolIsFile() at jsc.cpp:1340 and rejects before resolve is reached, so the base branch never reaches that assert from a $vm hook.

Verification: Triggers when $vm.moduleLoaderLoadSync is called from a non-file caller source origin (an $.agent.start worker) on an assertions build. JSDollarVM.cpp:4477-4478 passes callerSourceOrigin(vm).url().string() to loader->resolve, reaching ASSERT(url.protocolIsFile()) at jsc.cpp:1430. $vm.moduleLoaderImport checks protocolIsFile() at jsc.cpp:1340 and rejects with a clean Error.

🟡 nit (optional): maintainers sorting failures after an upstream sync will not find these two fork-authored tests in the registry the root CLAUDE.md points them to. JSTests/BUN-TEST-DIFFERENCES.md:195 ("The fork's own tests") lists each fork test with what it holds the engine to, and the root CLAUDE.md says to add a test there when one is changed. Neither stress/vm-termination-at-trap-check.js nor stress/module-loader-load-sync.js is added, and neither carries the stress/bun-*.js name that section says fork tests mostly use. Fix: add a row for each test to that table (and consider the bun- prefix, since neither is a regression test meant for upstream). The sibling stress/vm-termination-deadline.js from #440 is also missing, so this is pre-existing precedent, not new breakage. [also at: JSTests/stress/module-loader-load-sync.js:1 - nit: maintainers sorting a later failure will not find these two fork-authored tests in JSTests/BUN-TEST-DIFFERENCES.md, whose "The fork's own tests" table is meant to list every one.]

Why this was flagged

The diff adds two new test files, JSTests/stress/vm-termination-at-trap-check.js and JSTests/stress/module-loader-load-sync.js, both exercising $vm hooks that exist only in this fork. The root CLAUDE.md:163 says JSTests/BUN-TEST-DIFFERENCES.md is the registry of the fork's test differences and 'When a test is changed, add it to that file'. That file's section at JSTests/BUN-TEST-DIFFERENCES.md:195-238 is the table of the fork's own tests, each with what it holds the engine to, and says most are named stress/bun-*.js. A grep of that file for 'vm-termination' and 'module-loader-load-sync' finds no row, and the diff does not touch the file. After an upstream sync a maintainer following section E of that file will not see these tests listed as the fork's own, and the convention of documenting each fork test's purpose is not followed. The existing stress/vm-termination-deadline.js is likewise unlisted, so the omission is consistent with a prior lapse rather than a new kind of breakage; this is nit-level.

Verification: Root CLAUDE.md:163 says "When a test is changed, add it to that file", and JSTests/BUN-TEST-DIFFERENCES.md:195-238 ("The fork's own tests") is a table listing each fork-authored test with what it holds the engine to. git diff 115632d8..HEAD --stat touches 9 files and none is JSTests/BUN-TEST-DIFFERENCES.md; the two new tests are fork-authored. So the registry no longer "lists every one" after this merge.
