TML-3762: MongoDB contracts record each index's name, so two indexes on the same keys can both be created and a drop removes the right one - #30952
One migration creates both indexes. Before, the second createIndex failed its precheck, because every index was named after its keys (email_1) and checked by its keys alone.
The decision
MongoIndex has a required name: the name MongoDB stores the index under. ADR 317 records the decision.
Prisma 8 PSL and TypeScript take the name from map: or the name option. Without one, an index gets the name MongoDB itself gives an unnamed index (email_1, title_text). So every database Prisma 8 built keeps its index names, and nothing is planned for it.
Two indexes in one collection that would get the same name are refused, and the message asks for map: or name. MongoDB cannot rename an index, so picking a name automatically could force a drop and rebuild of an existing index later.
The Prisma 6 reader gives each index the name Prisma 6 gives it: map: (or name: on @@index), otherwise <collection>_<fields>_key for unique indexes and _idx for the others, cut at 127 bytes, as prisma-engines 6.19.3 does. A Prisma 6 database holding User_email_key and User_email_idx now verifies, and db init creates both under those names.
The planner pairs indexes by their content, not their name. A changed name is a drop, then a create.
createIndex and dropIndex use the name. Their checks match the name and the content. Operation ids are index.<collection>.<create|drop>(<name>).
db verify reports an index whose name differs from the contract.
db update no longer rebuilds matching indexes
MongoDB lists a text index under _fts/_ftsx with every weight and language filled in, and a collation with every field filled in. db update and db init compared that raw listing with the contract. So every run dropped and recreated text indexes and indexes with a partly written collation, and a unique index briefly had no uniqueness check.
The planner now compares a database's indexes as db verify does, and still creates each index exactly as the contract writes it. A schema read from a database is marked fromDatabase, so a contract-to-contract plan (migration plan) still compares exactly. examples/retail-store now plans nothing against a database built from its contract. This closes TML-3640.
One limit is left: a collation field the contract does not write may hold any value in the database. So removing a collation field is planned by migration plan but not seen by db update or db verify. TML-3795 tracks it.
Upgrading
Storage hashes: every MongoDB contract with an index gets a new storage hash. Run prisma contract emit and prisma db sign. The database needs no change.
Old migration snapshots have no index names and no longer load. The app upgrade note ships a script that adds names to them. It takes each name from the project's own emitted contract, prints a line for every index it has to name after its keys, and keeps each snapshot's hash, because markers, the ledger and migration from/to name it.
Migration files written by earlier releases still run: createIndex and dropIndex without a name use the name built from the keys.
The extension note lists the API changes: MongoIndex.name, MongoSchemaIndex.name and id, the factory options, MongoSchemaIR's fromDatabase, and the refusal kind indexNameDuplicate.
Evidence
Unit tests: every touched package.
Real-MongoDB tests in runner-index-names.test.ts:
unique plus plain, plain plus sparse, two variant-scoped indexes and a collation-only pair, each created in one migration;
drop by name;
a database from today's naming plans nothing;
retail-store and compound indexes with options plan nothing;
db init creates text indexes as the contract writes them.
CLI journeys: the Prisma 6 journey verifies User_email_key and User_email_idx, reports a renamed index as drift, and creates both from an empty database.
Detection and script tests: for both upgrade notes.
Manual QA: the CLI against a MongoDB replica set, in 8 cases (PSL pairs, the refusal, variants, Prisma 6 names, an upgraded database, rename, drop, the upgrade script). All passed.
Checks:fixtures:check, lint:deps, lint:ratchets and check:upgrade-coverage pass.
Alternatives considered
Hashed names, as SQL does (ADR 243). SQL needs a content hash in the name because Postgres reprints expression text. MongoDB index content compares exactly. MongoDB also cannot rename an index, so moving existing databases to hashed names would rebuild every index.
No names in the contract; drop by content at run time. This needs a new runner command, leaves names unchecked, and still cannot describe Prisma 6 names.
An optional name, where a missing name means the default. This keeps storage hashes, but the contract would no longer state what the database holds, and every reader of it would need the default rule.
Closes TML-3762. Closes TML-3640.

New Features
MongoDB index names are now recorded in contracts, including generated defaults and names specified in Prisma schemas.
Duplicate index names within a collection are reported as errors.
Migration planning and schema verification now account for index names, including detecting name mismatches and planning a drop-and-recreate when needed.
Documentation
Added guidance for updating existing MongoDB contracts and migrations to include index names.

MongoDB index names are now required in contracts and schema IR, preserved by authoring and introspection, and used by migration planning, operations, and verification. The change also adds duplicate-name diagnostics, Prisma 6 naming rules, upgrade tooling, and updates to examples, migration snapshots, documentation, and tests.

Index contracts and authoring packages/2-mongo-family/1-foundation/mongo-contract/*, packages/2-mongo-family/2-authoring/contract-prisma6/*, packages/2-mongo-family/2-authoring/contract-psl/*, packages/2-mongo-family/2-authoring/contract-ts/*
Mongo indexes carry required names. PSL and TypeScript authoring derive or retain names and refuse duplicate names within a collection. Prisma 6 parsing adds naming, validation, and duplicate-name diagnostics.
Schema conversion and verification packages/2-mongo-family/3-tooling/mongo-schema-ir/*, packages/2-mongo-family/9-family/src/core/*, packages/3-targets/mongo/2-adapter/*
Schema IR stores index names as IDs and records whether a schema came from a database. Introspection preserves MongoDB names. Verification compares names after pairing indexes by content.
Migration planning and operations packages/2-mongo-family/4-query/query-ast/*, packages/3-targets/mongo/1-target/*
Index operation IDs and calls include names. Create checks name conflicts and matching definitions. Drop operates by name and checks keys and options when provided. The planner emits drop-and-create operations when paired indexes have different names.
Compatibility and upgrade support upgrade-instructions/pending/mongo-index-names/*, examples/mongo-demo/migrations/*, examples/retail-store/migrations/*, examples/*/src/contract.*
Upgrade instructions and a script add names to existing contract snapshots and declarations. Example contracts, hashes, migration references, and named index operations are updated.
Tests and fixtures cover named indexes, duplicate-name refusals, migration behavior, verification drift, Prisma 6 initialization, and upgrade-script behavior. Architecture and error-reference documentation describe the new naming rules.

The MongoDB index-name upgrade script can crash when it scans a project containing a broken or looping symlink. Users can work around this by removing the symlink, but the script should skip symlinks before it is relied on for upgrades.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Do not follow symlinks in walk.
walk calls statSync on every directory entry, and statSync follows symlinks. There are two failure cases:
Broken symlink:statSync throws ENOENT and the script stops with an uncaught error. This can happen before the script writes any file, or partway through.
Symlink to an ancestor directory:walk recurses without end. The recursion ends in ELOOP or a stack overflow.
node_modules is skipped, but symlinks elsewhere under a project root are common, for example in apps/* or fixture directories. Users run this script on real repositories, so a crash blocks the upgrade step.
The fix: read entries with withFileTypes and skip symlinks. Contract snapshots and emitted contracts are regular files, so skipping symlinks does not lose any input.
