This PR allows assessments to choose between which runtime to run the autograder for. This is implemented as a new field in the XML assessment file under library configuration.

The supported runtimes are:

  • legacy - old, Source/Javascript based runtime
  • python - python runtime which using py-slang py2js

In future, the conductor runtime can be added to support all languages and features of conductor. Other fields such as variant can be used to choose the particular conductor runtime (TBD on how this will actually work).

Also added some tests to validate the behaviour of choosing runtime as well as XML parsing of the runtime.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for Python grading runtimes alongside the existing legacy runtime.
    • Python questions now use a dedicated grading service configuration.
    • Library runtime information is included in grading requests and assessment details.
  • Validation
    • Runtime values are validated, defaulting to legacy when unspecified.
    • Invalid runtime values now produce a clear request error.

Walkthrough

The change adds runtime metadata to grading libraries. XML parsing validates legacy and python runtimes, autograder execution selects the matching Lambda, and grading responses expose the runtime.

Changes

Runtime-aware grading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime parsing and storage
lib/cadet/assessments/library.ex, lib/cadet/jobs/xml_parser.ex, test/support/xml_generator.ex, test/cadet/assessments/library_test.exs, test/cadet/updater/xml_parser_test.exs
Libraries store a validated runtime value. Missing values default to legacy. Unsupported values return parsing errors.
Runtime-based Lambda routing
config/*.exs*, lib/cadet/jobs/autograder/lambda_worker.ex, test/cadet/jobs/autograder/lambda_worker_test.exs
The worker selects the configured Lambda for legacy or python and includes the runtime in the request payload.
Runtime response exposure
lib/cadet_web/helpers/assessments_helpers.ex, test/cadet_web/admin_controllers/admin_grading_controller_test.exs
Assessment views and staff/admin grading responses include library runtime values.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 25375

The PR adds runtime selection, but omitted runtime attributes currently fail instead of defaulting to legacy, while unsupported values can be saved and later make grading fail for affected assessments. The PR is not merge-ready until validation and default handling are corrected.
