What

The Windows installer now shows a folder page instead of installing in one click into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\SurfSense:

nsis:
  oneClick: false
  perMachine: false
  allowToChangeInstallationDirectory: true
  • The default folder is unchanged. The installer still installs for the current user only, so neither it nor an update asks for elevation.
  • An update installs into the folder already chosen. The appId and the uninstall key do not change, so existing installs upgrade in place.
  • Models, workspaces and settings stay in ~/.surfsense; only the program moves.

scripts/nsis-install-folder.test.mjs pins the three keys, as deb-control.test.mjs does for the deb section. docs/architecture/packaging.md says where the program and the data go.

Why

The reporter could not choose where SurfSense installs, and said two or three more installer screens are fine.

Fixes #2288

How to test

cd surfsense_local/electron && pnpm test

On Windows, a release-local.yml dry run's SurfSense-Setup.exe should show the folder page and install into a folder on another drive. Installing it over an existing 2.2.x should upgrade in place. Not yet tried on a real machine.

High-level PR Summary

This PR modifies the Windows installer configuration to allow users to choose their installation directory, addressing a user request for more control over where SurfSense installs. The change replaces the one-click installation (which defaulted to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\SurfSense) with a multi-step installer that shows a folder selection page. The installer remains per-user (no elevation required), and existing installations will upgrade in-place. The change includes test coverage to ensure the configuration remains correct and updates documentation to clarify where the program and data are stored.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Windows users can now choose where to install the app. Installation remains limited to the current user and does not require elevation.
    • Models, workspaces, and settings remain stored separately from the app installation.

📝 Walkthrough

The Windows NSIS installer now lets users choose a per-user installation folder. Tests verify the installer settings. Packaging documentation describes the default installation location and distinguishes it from the location used for models, workspaces, and settings.

Changes: Windows Installer Folder Selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and document the selectable install folder
surfsense_local/electron/electron-builder.yml, surfsense_local/electron/scripts/nsis-install-folder.test.mjs, docs/architecture/packaging.md
The NSIS configuration allows users to choose an installation folder and keeps installation per-user. Tests assert these settings. Documentation describes the default install location and the separate user-data location.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 08351

Windows users can choose an all-users install and trigger elevation, although the intended flow is per-user. Restrict the installer to current-user mode before relying on it as per-user-only.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 08351

The folder-selection flow also enables an all-users installation option, contrary to the stated current-user-only behavior. That option requires administrator authorization, limiting the risk, but it changes installation ownership and can make later updates request elevation.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The assisted installer does not enforce the intended current-user-only boundary. With oneClick:false, perMachine:false exposes an installation-scope choice and default-enabled elevation permits all-users installation. That path changes ownership to machine-wide registry and program locations; subsequent silent machine-wide upgrades can also request elevation. The previous one-click flow selected current-user mode directly. This is an authority and lifecycle expansion, not an administrator-authorization bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated expansion is host-local: an operator can select installation for all users rather than only the current account. This affects machine-wide program files, installation registration and update privileges. The inspected change does not establish a remote or cross-service attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Current-user installation remains the default when no installation exists. Selecting all-users installation invokes elevation unless already administrative; denied elevation prevents advancing through that choice. These controls limit the scope concern and do not support a privilege-escalation bypass claim.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The shared installer implementation retains a GUID-based single-instance guard, waits for old-version uninstallation before copying new files, and attempts restoration when update-time file removal fails. These inherited mechanisms do not establish whole-install transactional rollback: old-version removal precedes replacement, and extraction can terminate on failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce current-user mode explicitly in the assisted installer if that is the intended boundary. Disabling elevation alone is insufficient when launched administratively. Validate the effective scope choice and non-elevated upgrade behavior, including installation on another drive.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2288 requests a typical installation that is not restricted to the default C: location. electron-builder.yml sets oneClick: false and allowToChangeInstallationDirectory: true, so the Windows installer provides a folder-selection page. It keeps perMachine: false, so the per-user installation behavior remains unchanged. nsis-install-folder.test.mjs verifies all three settings.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2288. The installer configuration implements folder selection. The test verifies the configuration. The packaging documentation records the resulting install and data locations. No unrelated product behavior is shown in the supplied evidence.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Force per-user mode instead of offering it as a choice.

With oneClick: false, perMachine: false shows an install-mode page; it does not restrict the installer to the current user. A user can select an all-users install and trigger elevation, contrary to this PR’s per-user-only requirement. The test in surfsense_local/electron/scripts/nsis-install-folder.test.mjs checks only the false value, so it misses this behavior. Use the customInstallMode hook to set $isForceCurrentInstall and test that mode. electron-builder v26 documents this page behavior and hook. (electron.build)
