ADFA-5646

The Add-ons Manager's discover-plugins arrow opens a website with no offline fallback, so tapping it offline was a dead end. It is now hidden when the device has no validated connection, or when Gradle offline mode is on.

Review by commit

  1. 86062e7ac - ConnectivityObserver (common): a NetworkCallback in a callbackFlow. PluginManagerViewModel collects it into PluginManagerUiState.isOnline (default true, so a connected cold start does not flash-hide the arrow), and ManagerScreen gates the arrow on it.

  2. 1c960a843 - review fixes. State comes from the callbacks' own data via OnlineNetworks, never from re-querying ConnectivityManager: in onLost, activeNetwork could still name the lost network and leave the arrow visible offline. The callback is registered before the initial sample, so a disconnect during startup is not lost. Online requires NET_CAPABILITY_VALIDATED, so a captive portal counts as offline. (Commit 4 replaces this commit's network set with the default network.) isNetworkConnected() is unchanged: it also gates Git clone, pull and push, and tightening those is outside this PR.

  3. ae62b898c - the arrow is also hidden when Gradle offline mode is on (Preferences > Build & Run, BuildPreferences.isOfflineEnabled). The UI state exposes showDiscoverPlugins = isOnline && !isOfflineModeEnabled.

  4. b810e7b53 - review fix: the observer uses registerDefaultNetworkCallback, so the callbacks and the initial sample (activeNetwork) follow the same network, a VPN included. Before, a NetworkRequest excluded VPNs, so a broken VPN left the arrow visible while the network underneath stayed validated. OnlineNetworks became DefaultNetworkState, which tracks that one network: a loss counts only for the current default, so a switch to a new default is not a disconnect.

  5. 447fd9360 - merge repair. Today's merge of stage (c37a0d340, bringing in ADFA-6729 ADFA-6729: List only .cgp/.cgt files when installing from Downloads #2177) resolved its two conflicts to stage's side only:

    • Dropped: PluginModule.kt lost the BuildPreferences import (CI failed with Unresolved reference 'BuildPreferences') and the ConnectivityObserver Koin binding, which would have made the ViewModel's get() throw at runtime. ManagerScreen.kt lost the KDoc offline sentence.
    • Semantic conflict: ADFA-6729's new PluginManagerViewModelSourceDeleteTest built the ViewModel without this PR's two new parameters, so it now passes an always-online observer.
    • Checked: with --remerge-diff and a line-by-line comparison, no other line from either side was lost. :app compiles, PluginManagerViewModelTest (5), PluginManagerViewModelSourceDeleteTest (2), DefaultNetworkStateTest (8) and spotlessCheck pass.

Testing

  • DefaultNetworkStateTest (8, plain JUnit): losing the default network reports offline; a switch to a new default stays online; a default network that loses validation (a broken VPN) reports offline; validation gates online; the initial sample loses to an earlier callback; a first callback reporting offline is sent; unchanged answers are not resent. With the current-default guard in onLost removed, the switch test fails.
  • PluginManagerViewModelTest (5): isOnline on init and on change; the arrow shows only when online and not in offline mode. With the offline-mode check removed, showDiscoverPlugins_hiddenInOfflineModeEvenWhenOnline fails.
  • spotlessCheck and :app:compileV8DebugKotlin pass on b810e7b53.
  • On device, for 86062e7ac: turning Wi-Fi and mobile data off hides the arrow, and turning them on brings it back.
  • On a Pixel 6 Pro (Android 17), with Wi-Fi as the only network, on both ae62b898c and b810e7b53, the arrow updated live each time with no navigation:
    • online, offline mode off: shown;
    • Wi-Fi off (the lost-only-network case): hidden;
    • Wi-Fi back on: hidden while the connection was not yet validated (about 5 s), shown once validated;
    • --offline on with Wi-Fi validated: hidden; off again: shown.
  • Not tested on a device: switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data (the test phone's SIM had no data service), a captive portal, and a VPN. Unit tests cover the switch and a broken VPN.
  • No new screen or layout change, so no font-scale check.

The Extensions Manager's discover-plugins action opens a URL with no offline
fallback, so tapping it while offline was a dead end. Hide it instead of
letting the user find that out the hard way.

Adds ConnectivityObserver (common module): a ConnectivityManager.NetworkCallback
wrapped in a callbackFlow, re-deriving from the existing Context.isNetworkConnected()
on every callback so a Wi-Fi -> cellular handover isn't misreported as offline.
PluginManagerViewModel collects it into a new PluginManagerUiState.isOnline
field (defaults true to avoid flash-hiding the icon on a connected cold start),
and ManagerScreen gates the icon on it.

Verified on-device: toggling Wi-Fi/mobile data off hides the icon; toggling
back on brings it back live, with no navigation or manual refresh needed.

Summary
  • Hide the discover-plugins action when the device’s default network lacks validated internet or Gradle offline mode is enabled.
  • Update visibility as connectivity changes. Treat captive portals as offline.
  • Risk: Device testing did not cover captive portals or Wi-Fi-to-mobile-data switching.
  • Tests and checks: The supplied context reports six connectivity tests, five view-model tests, and a passing spotlessCheck. These results are author-reported and were not independently verified.
  • Review findings: Severity counts are unavailable.

The plugin manager now tracks validated network connectivity and Gradle offline mode. It hides the Discover action when the device is offline or Gradle offline mode is enabled.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b810e

Discover visibility follows connectivity and offline mode; no merge-blocking risk was identified.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 86062

The new connectivity flow controls whether an existing discovery link is visible. It does not grant plugin installation authority or replace an access control. The link may briefly remain visible before connectivity is observed or if observation fails.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected effect of an incorrect online value is limited to visibility of the discovery link, not expanded plugin-installation authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Platform connectivity is treated as presentation state, not as proof of user identity, permission, or a safe destination. The Discover click still delegates to the existing URL opener.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Normal cancellation releases the registered callback. If registration fails, collection may end without later corrections to the optimistic online value; that affects this UI availability cue, not an identified security control.

callback delivery so a disconnect during startup cannot leave the flow reporting
stale connectivity.
- Line 47: Update the NetworkCallback flow so it derives internet connectivity
from the networks and capabilities delivered by callbacks, rather than calling

and handle onLost using the remaining tracked networks so losing one network
does not report disconnection while another is available.

IMPORTANT

  • ConnectivityObserver.kt:50 - onLost can re-report the lost network as online

MINOR

  • ContextUtils.kt:127 (anchored at ConnectivityObserver.kt:58) - online check ignores NET_CAPABILITY_VALIDATED

I feel like the sense of this PR is backwards. Cogo is intended to be primarily offline so the icon should default to not visible, and only appear when the app is online.

Each callback re-read connectivity through isNetworkConnected(). In
onLost, activeNetwork can still name the network just lost, so losing
the only network could report online, and with no network left no
later callback corrected it: the arrow stayed visible while offline.

OnlineNetworks now tracks the networks the callbacks reported as
online and emits whether any remain. The callback is registered
before the initial sample, and the sample is used only if no callback
has changed the state yet, so a disconnect during startup is not
lost. Online also requires NET_CAPABILITY_VALIDATED, so a captive
portal counts as offline. isNetworkConnected() is unchanged; it also
gates Git operations.

The arrow opens a website, so it is now hidden when the user has
turned on offline mode (Build & Run preferences) as well as when the
device has no validated connection. The ViewModel reads the preference
through a function, wired to BuildPreferences.isOfflineEnabled, and
the UI state exposes showDiscoverPlugins.

The callback came from a NetworkRequest, which excludes VPNs, while
the initial sample read activeNetwork, which can be one. With a VPN as
the default network, a broken VPN left the arrow visible: the callbacks
still saw the validated network underneath, but the app's traffic went
through the VPN.

The observer now registers registerDefaultNetworkCallback, the same
network activeNetwork names. OnlineNetworks becomes DefaultNetworkState
and tracks that one network: a loss counts only for the current
default, so a switch to a new default is not a disconnect, and the
first answer is always sent, even when it is offline.

The merge of stage in c37a0d3 conflicted with ADFA-6729 (#2177) in
PluginModule.kt and ManagerScreen.kt, and both conflicts were resolved
to stage's side only. That lost:

- the BuildPreferences import, so :app:compileV8DebugKotlin failed with
  "Unresolved reference 'BuildPreferences'" (PluginModule.kt:48);
- the ConnectivityObserver Koin binding and its two imports, which would
have made PluginManagerViewModel's get() throw NoBeanDefFoundException
  once the build passed;
- the KDoc sentence saying the discover-plugins arrow is hidden while
offline, now also naming Gradle offline mode.

Both sides are kept: the binding sits beside ADFA-6729's
DownloadFilesRepository. No other ADFA-5646 or ADFA-6729 line was lost
by the merge.

The merge also combined two changes git could not see conflict:
ADFA-6729 added PluginManagerViewModelSourceDeleteTest, constructing the
ViewModel without ADFA-5646's new parameters, so the :app unit tests did
not compile. That test now passes an always-online observer, and
PluginManagerViewModelTest's KDoc no longer claims the rest of the
ViewModel is untested.
