Codablock A

The Codablock A barcode symbology is a 2D stacked-linear barcode that consists of a number of stacked Code 39 symbols, each row a complete Code 39 symbol. It encodes the Code 39 character set.

Also known as: Codablock 39, Codablock Alpha.

Standards: AIM HD/13-005 Historical Document - Codablock A (ICS Codablock A symbology specification).

Data and Options

  • The data field can contain upper case letters, digits and the characters -, ., space, $, /, + and %, up to 1340 characters.
  • Each row begins and ends with a row indicator, the first row's giving the number of rows and the others the position of the row. A symbol of a single row has only the indicator at its start. Two check characters calculated over all of the data end the last row, preceded by filler spaces when the data does not fill it.
  • The columns option specifies the number of data characters in each row, from 1 to 61. The default is 8.
  • The rows option specifies the number of rows in the symbol, from 1 to 22.
  • If rows is unspecified the encoder will default to the smallest number of rows that can hold the given data.
  • The rowheight option specifies the height of the bars in each row in modules, at least 8. The default is the minimum height in the specification for the number of columns, which is about a twentieth of the width of a row and at least 8.
  • The sepheight option specifies the height of the separator bars enclosing the rows in modules, from 1 to 5. The default is 1.
