VIN

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) symbol is a Code 39 barcode, without a symbol check character, carrying the 17-character number that identifies a road vehicle.

Uses:

  • Vehicle labels and documents.

Standards: ISO 3779 Road vehicles - Vehicle identification number (VIN) - Content and structure; US 49 CFR Part 565 Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Requirements. These define the number; its Code 39 form is industry practice.

Data and Options

  • The data field is the 17-character VIN, of digits and upper case letters other than I, O and Q.
  • The check digit in the ninth position is required of every vehicle for the US market, and is verified when the World Manufacturer Identifier begins with a digit from 1 to 5, for North America. Elsewhere the ninth position may be any VIN character.
  • The options of Code 39 are available, such as hidestars to omit the asterisks from the human readable text, except for those of the symbol check character.
